The breast shell is a plastic device with one part that fits over the nipple and an outer shell with ventilation holes. The shell provides a barrier against friction and pressure on the nipples, allowing the passage of air for aeration of the skin [ 10, 20]. It is made up of two pieces, an inner solid piece with a hole that goes over the nipple and that may collect milk and the other that acts as a protective ventilated shell for the nipple. If one breast is easier for your baby to grasp and he nurses well from that breast, you can continue to feed on that side. You can pump the breast with the deeply inverted nipple until the adhesions loosen and the nipple is drawn out. Your baby will get all the milk he needs from one breast if allowed unlimited and unrestricted time at the breast. You can wear milk collection shells during breastfeeding to catch leaking milk as described above, as well as between feeds to avoid wet patches. Just remember to remove them every two to three hours and let your breasts air-dry, as this prevents any excess moisture damaging your nipples. And avoid wearing breast shells in bed at night, as this can cause skin tenderness – you could try disposable nursing pads to absorb heavy leaking breast milk instead, or Ultra thin disposable nursing pads if your flow is lighter.
