About this deal

Kids can build a universe and collect other Barbie® Space Discovery™ toys to fuel even more storytelling and role-play fun! In 2021, Mattel released its most recent astronaut doll with the Barbie Space Discovery line. This version of astronaut Barbie wears a white spacesuit with pink and blue detailing, white gloves, and white boots. The best part about this doll is that it's actually been to space! This is the version of Barbie that was chosen for Mattel’s Mission DreamStar expedition to the International Space Station in 2022.

Like anything else that flies in space, the two dolls received special preparation before the flight. Although Barbie dolls are well known for coming with multiple accessories; those remained on the ground for this mission. And both Barbie dolls sport hair that has been styled, not just to prevent the flyaways of a bad hair day, but also to literally keep any hair from shedding into the spaceflight environment. A former NASA engineer who became the first Mexican-born woman to fly into space now has a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll attesting to her being a role model for the next generation of scientists and explorers.Among the line are: a Wildlife Conservationist, a Polar Marine Biologist, a Wildlife Photojournalist, an Entomologist, as well as the Astrophysicist. Each doll was developed with the help of a National Geographic advisory team made up of female National Geographic Explorers and National Geographic magazine editor-in-chief Susan Goldberg. Released 13 years before NASA accepted its first female astronauts and 18 years before the first American woman would go to space, the Miss Astronaut outfitted doll was ahead of her time. As such, she served the important purpose of showing young girls that they too could dream of spaceflight before there were women astronauts at NASA to be such role models. 1980s Earth-bound throughout the 1970s, Barbie once again donned a spacesuit in 1985 — this time with flair. Unsurprisingly, this doll’s fashion choices were heavily influenced by the culture and trends of the 1980s. This version of Astronaut Barbie explores the Moon in a shiny, hot pink spacesuit. In true '80s fashion, her hair is too big to fit fully inside her helmet. 1980s Astronaut Barbie comes complete with a costume change, and the doll in our collection is displayed wearing her second outfit — a shiny peplum miniskirt worn over silver leggings and knee-high pink boots. As seen in the doll’s commercial, the fantastical hot pink and silver lamé outfit works for all occasions, whether you be landing on the Moon or getting down at the space disco. The Mars Explorer Barbie is Mattel's first Barbie promoted as produced in collaboration with NASA, after nearly a 50-year history of dressing the dolls in spacesuits. (Image credit: Mattel) But the new astronaut Barbie isn’t the only one going on space adventures this year. Mattel has collaborated with National Geographic to create a line of STEM career Barbies, including an astrophysicist. This line of Barbie dolls was specifically focused on science occupations in which women are underrepresented.

The new Astronaut Barbie is one of six iconic careers celebratingthe Mattel toy line. The other careers featured are: Pilot, Athlete, Journalist, Political Candidate and Firefighter. They are all scheduled for release this spring. Visit us in Washington, DC and Chantilly, VA to explore hundreds of the world’s most significant objects in aviation and space history. Move over Hillary Clinton. Another female presidential candidate is set to enter the race this Autumn: Barbie. Make that Barbies, because, for her sixth run for the Oval Office, the plastic pop-culture icon will be sold as a two-doll Barbie president and vice-president set in a range of skin tones. You can be the first in outer space, fantastic fun in a far-out place. Then, for a change of pace, we know a spacey spot where this mini will look real hot!" Visitors to the museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, can see four iterations of Astronaut Barbie: 1965 Miss Astronaut, 1985 Astronaut Barbie, 1994 Moon landing Barbie, and the two Barbies that went to space in 2022. They join a vast collection of aviation and space themed toys that explore how society and culture has been impacted by flight and space exploration.

Astronaut Barbie's accessories took a more realistic turn in 1994 in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the first moon landing. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. It often indicates a user profile.

Bonus: Barbie has also had a long career in aviation! Over the years she has served as a flight attendant, commercial pilot, military pilot, and more. The Museum has five aviation-themed Barbies (and one Ken) in its collection, though they are not on display at this time. 1980s

Inspired by the pressure suits worn by the all-male U.S. Mercury astronauts of the era, the Barbie Miss Astronaut (and matching "Ken Mr. Astronaut") spacesuits were silver with brown mittens and boots. Each outfit included a white helmet and an American flag for the dolls to carry. The advisory team helped Mattel create accessories that are relevant for each Barbie’s career. Astrophysicist Barbie, for example, comes with a telescope, a star chart, and a fun nebula-printed shirt (like you'd likely find in the closet of a a real-life astrophysicist). In 2021, Mattel released its most recent astronaut doll with the Barbie Space Discovery line. This version of astronaut Barbie wears a white spacesuit with pink and blue detailing, white gloves, and white boots. The best part about this doll, however, is that she is the first Barbie doll to ever actually visit space! This is the version of Barbie that was chosen for Mattel’s Mission DreamStar expedition to the International Space Station in 2022. In honor of these two new and very special additions to our collection, we are documenting Barbie’s long career as one of our nation’s foremost space explorers. 1960s Helping people understand the world is, and always has been, the core purpose of National Geographic," Goldberg said in press release. "Through our partnership with Barbie, we are excited to reach kids in a new way, using the power of play to inspire our next generation of explorers, scientists and photographers."On June 4, 2022, Echazarreta lifted off on a 10-minute suborbital spaceflight on Blue Origin's New Shepard launch vehicle. In addition to being the first Mexican-born woman to cross the boundary between Earth and space, Echazarreta was also the first "citizen astronaut" to fly in a seat sponsored by the non-profit Space for Humanity. Born in Mexico, Echazarreta moved to the U.S. with her family when she was eight years old. She earned her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while interning at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. Later, she accepted a position as engineer and worked on five missions, including the Perseverance rover now on Mars and Europa Clipper, which is set to be launched to Jupiter's moon in 2024. There has been a lot of controversy around Barbie’s body and appearance, as if she’s a real person, but very few dolls have realistic body proportions when you think about it. It’s quite remarkable,” muses Monier. “She is just a toy, after all.”
