About this deal

I could relate to the author and his passion for geography, especially geographic anomalies. Yet, I am no professional on the topic and still have much to learn. Maybe that's why I read through the whole book in one go. I definitely learned new stuff, from really obscure places to new information of less obscure places, and upon finishing the book (mostly read through it during my breaks at work) I will research my highlighted passages. Overall though I enjoyed the book. It’s an undemanding read for those who (like me) enjoy learning about these quirkier aspects of international politics.

Tis the season to be... flamboyant: Claridge's hotel unveils its Christmas tree - a dazzling sculpture by Louis Vuitton made from chrome trunks There are some places which I believe could have made the book as well, like Hans Island or the disputed area between Sudan and Egypt. Named after its highest peak, Athos is sometimes also simply called ‘Holy Mountain’, because of the 20 monasteries and 2,000 monks on its territory. The monks have been here since the 8th century and have survived centuries of war and occupation (not the exact same monks, obviously). The Greek constitution recognises the Monastic State as a self-governing territory of the Greek state. The governor it sends to Athos is merely an observer.

Meanwhile, the sequencing is pretty much random. Why not organize by continent (and perhaps occasionally cross-reference to similar stories elsewhere in the world)? In a later meeting with President Reagan, Gorbachev raised a glass to her and commented, “She proved by her courage how close to each other our peoples live.” Pheasant Island, France/Spain Campione d'Italia where Italian residents have to travel 15km through Switzerland to reach the nearest available Italian territory. Pheasant Island which for half a year belongs to the Spanish city of Irun, and the remaining half, to its French twin-town, Hendaye

He adds: ‘The Moroccan authorities consider all of these territories to be the remainders of Spanish colonial occupation and that they should be returned immediately.’ The inhabitants of Llivia – there are around 1,500 of them – ‘often regard their town as the “birthplace” of Catalonia' And there you have it: terra nullius. That’s legalese for No Man’s Land. However, like nature, geopolitics abhors a vacuum. Rather than wait or both countries to come to a compromise, various parties have sought to lay claim to the grey zone between them, and proclaimed it to be the Free Republic of Liberland, or the Kingdom of Enclava. While there's a lot of fascinating info here – I'm glad I read the book – there's at least one error: Washington DC is not "leased to the U.S. Federal government by the states of Maryland and Virginia." The original 10-mile square DC was on land ceded by Maryland and Virginia in 1790. But in 1847 Virginia cleverly convinced the US government that the portion west of the Potomac would surely never be needed (mind you, the Pentagon is located there now) and should be returned to Virginia.

The best 100 cities on the planet ranked - and 'despite Brexit' it's London that's No.1, followed by Paris and New York. So where does YOUR favourite city come on the list? Mr Nikolic explains that they are a ‘few small islands and peninsulas’ known as Spanish sovereign territories (plazas de soberanía).Tomb of Suleyman Shah which is a tiny Turkish enclave within Syria which was moved closer to Turkey when Lake Assad was created but still stayed in Syria Numerous conflicts have left countries divided and often shattered. Remnants of countries can by design or accident be left behind as a legal anomaly in this complex world. In just a swimsuit and cap, her body temperature plummeted. By the time she got out, her fingers were grey and her hands looked like they belonged to a cadaver. The world's most stunning remote locations revealed in lavish photo book - from spellbinding Cornish beaches to a crooked forest in Denmark and jaw-dropping mountains in the U.S
