About this deal

Pfffff. J'en peux plus de ces gens. Donnez moi des nuances, faites moi croire en vos personnages. Ces marionnettes en papier mâché ont cessé de m'amuser bien trop vite. Thorn and his aunt Berenilde can flay Ophelia with their minds... And Archibald, the ambassador, is mentally connected to his family! There is another clan all about illusions, and Ophelia gets up close and personal with one magical outfit! It's all deliciously dangerous... Slow paced. Pretty Character driven and a lot in the head of the main character since she spends a lot of time not talking. Main character is so bland, it was hard to root for her. It’s nice to not have the same strong warrior for once but man is she bland.

A Winter's Promise" is the very first volume of the Mirror Visitor Quartet, showcasing the moment when Ophelia's world is turned upside down. It's tough not to say more without spoiling anything, so I won't. I read the novel in a couple of sittings, even if there wasn't as much action (so far) as I thought there would be. We do spend, however, a lot of time in Ophelia's shoes, observing, discovering and appreciating a world building of staggering beauty. If you like stories with imaginary worlds, singular architecture and flamboyant characters, this is for you. The social structure on The Pole is also notably different than that of Animas as the people are divided by class and ability. There is a ruling class who gravitate around the Family Spirt, Lord Farouk, and everyone else. Ophelia isn’t used to this type of demarcation of classes as it doesn’t exist on Animas. I personaggi non mi sono piaciuti per niente, la protagonista è carina all'inizio ma è davvero troppo imbranata e rincoglionita. Io posso capire voler rappresentare una ragazza comune un po' impacciata, ma qui sfioriamo davvero la labirintite. Il resto dei personaggi è come se non esistesse per me. Piatti e anonimi come la suola delle mie scarpe. I've shared my loving adoration of Ophelia, but I'll say again that I love how she jumped into this world that is everything she is not and is dealing with it. She is not in her natural habitat and that is what made her so great...The male-lead is an indifferent, grumpy asshole, and my only satisfaction comes from the fact that Ophélie, the MC, doesn't love him. GOOD. I could have done without her crazy interpretation of his actions, though, even if it made for a good laugh : this guy, who put her in harm way and did NOTHING to prevent her from being the naive and stupid girl she stays during the whole book, finally tells her that, I quote (well, I translate, lol), "he was starting to get used to her". Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions. I see a lot of people in the comments saying they won’t read the book because of this review (which is valid), but I advice for anyone who’s reading this to try for themselves. Tante Rosamonde – Ophelia’s aunt, she is a sweet and caring woman who provides a sense of stability and comfort to Ophelia throughout the book.

Winter’s Promisse was the book that remind me why I love fantasy so much. The world builing is amazing, the premisse is really interesting and unique and the characters… not going to lie, I loved them as well. They’re complex, have layers and motifs.Note : This review will be divided into two parts : the first one in English et la deuxième en français. Long ago, following a cataclysm called the Rupture, the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands, now known as arks. Over each, the spirit of an omnipotent and immortal ancestor abides. The inhabitants of these arks each possess a unique power. Ophelia, with her ability to read the pasts of objects, must navigate this fantastic, disjointed, perilous world using her trademark tenacity and quiet strength.

Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire 2016 – Alter1fo". Alter1fo (in French). 11 May 2016 . Retrieved 27 April 2018. The book was translated into English by Hildegarde Serle in 2019. In 2013, “La Passe-miroir, tome 1: Les Fiancés de l’hiver” was the book’s debut French publication. A winter’s promiseCharacters Sounds cool, right? The world-building has some great potential, and I do realize that this is only the first book in a series, but let’s go over some of the problems I had with this book: La Passe-miroir ", le succès transgénérationnel de Christelle Dabos". Le Monde.fr (in French) . Retrieved 27 April 2018.Les fiancés de l'hiver, Gallimard Jeunesse, Collection Hors Série, 528p, 2013, ( ISBN 9782070653768) She is no longer the same person she was when she first stepped foot on the Ark of the Pole because of the growth and changes she has through on her voyage.

The book’s dramatic and thrilling conclusion is the battle between the several factions vying for power and control over the Arks. Ophelia must use every wit and talent she possesses to survive and protect those she loves. If you read a lot of Y.A. literature, this book will seem vaguely familiar to you. That’s because it just borrows a bunch of ideas from the most popular books out there. Harry Potter, Shadow and Bone (for a clueless girl thrown into a royal court), Vampire Diaries, too (Ambassador Archibald is a carbon copy of Adrian Ivashkov, or more accurately, a less charismatic version of him), and so many more I can’t be bothered to remember. The whole story is just a washed-out copy of those books.

When the world shattered, floating splinters of land called arks came under the control of powerful immortals—the family spirits for each ark. Small, quiet Ophelia wants nothing more than to look after the family museum on the Anima ark, where her power to “read” the pasts of objects and to travel through mirrors is unsurpassed. Ophelia’s life is flipped suddenly upside down when she is thrust into a diplomatic arranged marriage, and the unassuming but willful Animist must travel to the snow-covered Pole ark with an equally frigid and foreboding fianceé, Thorn. No sooner does she arrive than Ophelia finds herself in the middle of a treacherous game of politics and power in which the stakes are the very highest—her life. Dabos has managed the rarely seen triad of complex worldbuilding, nuanced character development, and enthralling plot, even making it look easy. Not a seam shows in this intricate narrative weave that centers on and empowers an endearingly bookish and clumsy antiheroine without insisting she change. Racial diversity is absent; Ophelia more than once comments that she has never had romantic or sexual feelings for a man. A fascinating world and magic system, bogged down by court intrigue and a main character that could have used more spice and distinctiveness
