About this deal

Ruby Wax has written a guide to mindfulness that's as hilarious as it is useful. Drawing on the latest science, she offers insightful, irreverent advice on how to improve every aspect of our lives, from our health and happiness to our relationships and careers. Arianna Huffington If you’re somewhat dubious about Ruby Wax’s suitability to educate the masses on mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), consider this: in 2013, the actor and TV personality gained a Master’s degree in MBCT from Oxford University; she’s spent much of her latter career raising mental health awareness; and A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled follows her earlier mental health novel, Sane New World. Although, it doesn’t have all the answers (and no book ever will) Ruby Wax’s Frazzled will guide you in the right direction. If you enjoy the practice of mindfulness, you can then build on what you learn in this book. Ruby Wax A Mindfulness Guide For The Frazzled Review I saw this book at university. And it felt like I should finally get a handle on my far-away mind. This book was sitting on one of those temporarily constructed stands at the library. I probably ruined the spread, loaning it but I felt it could fulfil a deep need. With the right practice, I’m certain mindfulness will deliver. Mindfulness is not a new concept although it’s been highlighted in western culture in recent years as being the next ‘best way to stop anxiety and depression’.

Ruby has a real human ability to tell it how it is and connect with the reader on a base level. Giving that she herself has gone through ups and downs in her life, she is able to create not just an informative book on the science of mindfulness but also an entertaining one.

l'argomento mi intriga, e il sistema bibliotecario aveva da offrire questo e poco altro: ho avuto sfortuna

A wonderful book full of passion and verve. Ruby Wax gives her unique take on the science and practice of mindfulness. She shows how to meet - face to face - all that life throws at us, and gives her own step by step guide to finding deep stillness in the midst of the chaos Prof. Mark Williams What’s it called? “I don’t know what it’s called. It starts with an R.” She pauses, breaks into a smile. “Is that helpful? Maybe he’ll let me put my glasses on.”Well timed and combines a theoretical, practical and personal account of mindfulness... an easy, uplifting, humorous read The Psychologist This course puts you in charge. After six weeks you can practice what you learned – not just for Christmas, for life. There’s no running to someone and asking them to patch up your broken psyche. You’re your own PT for your brain. It is impossible to deny her enthusiasm and personal trauma, her will to be well and compassion for fellow sufferers.” – Helen Davies, Sunday Times (paywall) Buy the book I personally wanted to learn how to de-frazzle and, even more urgently, find a method to defuse my depression. After much research, I found out mindfulness and cognitive therapy (called MBCT) had the best results, as far as empirical evidence goes, in dealing with stress, depression and anxiety. The word mindfulness gives me the same vibes as dream-catchers and lentils, but Oxford University offers a master’s programme in MBCT so I thought there must be something to it. So I took the course, wrote my dissertation, spun it with comedy and boom, then got a book and show out of it. That’s killing multiple birds with one stone.

She proposes the notion that stress only exists by virtue of humankind’s advanced evolution (it doesn’t affect our cousin, the ape). But, while we’re capable of wonderful ingenuity and each in possession of a ratatouille of emotions, we’re still animals and thus prone to automatic, primal responses. Ruby Wax is out of it. Her words, not mine. “Can he [the photographer] take pictures of me with my sunglasses on?” she asks, and for once, she isn’t joking. She is semi-slumped on the sofa in the living room of her Notting Hill home, eating kebabs that her housekeeper has made. “I’m really glazed. I’m out of it with the medication. They’ve added something new and I’m supposed to take it at night but I took it in the day.”Mindfulness can be described in several different ways. I like to describe it as – training yourself to let life happen without passing judgment on every day thought and feelings that find their way to you. Essentially, with a good mindfulness routine, you’ll learn how to become grounded, how to re-connect with the world around you, how to let your negative thoughts exist without making you feel down and how to not pass judgment on those thoughts. Schools can embrace it and seize the opportunities it offers or try to resist and become obsolete. As the title suggests, Wax wants to impart guidance to people who are overcome with stress and constant worries. She outlines the principles and fundamental practices of mindfulness and then exhaustively promotes its efficacy in soothing mental unrest, improving self-understanding and contributing to continued human evolution. As well as self-improvement, the book covers social mindfulness and ways mindfulness can assist with raising children and dealing with teenagers. Yes, it is true that research into mindfulness on depression and anxiety is limited as of yet however those who practice it can vouch for its effectiveness. One of the beauties of mindfulness is, you don’t need and equipment and you can do it starting from today without ever having previous experience.

This manual for living must be read by everyone -- Peter Fonagy, Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis at UCL on 'Sane New World' Ruby Wax offers her own witty and accessible take on how mindfulness really can, in her view, change lives for the better * Choice Magazine * Ruby discovered comedy at the age of 16 as an unsuccessful way to get boys; she studied psychology at Berkeley but dropped out and moved to the UK, where she could escape her parents and train with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Probably closer to 4.5 actually. I remember Ruby Wax from my childhood, but didn't have a clue about her academic achievements, or her struggles with mental health.
