It was during a drama workshop at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre that Jim Hitchmough originally conceived the idea for Watching. After developing it into a successful stage play, he was commissioned by Granada Television to make a series. When Polly James decided to leave, she was replaced by Carol Boswell (Elizabeth Estensen) and her extended family including rabbit obsessed brother Lucien (Michael Angelis) and their God fearing mother, Mrs. Boswell (Carmel McSharry). Formed in 1983, these charismatic Scouse lads finally saw some real success in 1990. After appearing in a cameo role in the 1989 movie The Final Frame starring Suggs of Madness, they soon got signed and hired Suggs as their producer. They went on to have a storming 1990 — reaching the UK Top 10 with Groovy Train and All Together Now and reaching No.1 in the UK Albums Chart with Spartacus the following year. 9. Echo & The Bunnymen (21 points) Hitchmough’s gentle humour and sparkling dialogue ensured it became a much loved show, viewers faithfully following the couple’s trials and tribulations – including Malcolm’s short lived marriage to the humourless Lucinda (Elizabeth Morton) during a period of separation from Brenda.
Another Scouse band to achieve success mainly in the 90s, Cast emerged from the Britpop movement of the mid 90s. Their first three albums, All Change, Mother Nature Calls and Magic Hour all made the Top 10 in the UK Albums Chart, with various singles such as Walk Away and Guiding Star achieving a Top 10 status — they peaked at No.4 in 1996 with a stand-alone single, Flying. Cast share 23 points with Space, but take 6th place due to having more Top 10 singles and albums (neither band had a No.1 single or album). 5. The Christians (32 points)Their following album, Ocean Rain, achieved success in 1984 along with their acclaimed single, The Killing Moon. Since their self-titled album in 1987 and band member changes and reformations, success has been varied although they will always have a cult following. 8. The series was recorded in Birmingham, with various locations across the country standing in for Liverpool. Shot entirely on film, the series is arguably more quirky drama with comedy than traditional sitcom. O.M.D never actually had a UK No.1 single or a UK No.1 album, however they had 7 UK Top 10 singles, staying in the Top 10 for 30 weeks, and 6 UK Top 10 albums, staying in the Top 10 for 35 weeks. Front man, Andy McCluskey, is a hugely regarded song-writer and went on to conceive the popular girl group…. 2. In 1979, Schofield and Kingsley were asked to recreate the characters for the Granada TV Saturday morning show, The Mersey Pirate, which cemented their actor ownership of the parts. Five years later, Channel 4 reunited the two actors for a seven episode series which revolved around Scully making trouble for his teachers, who have promised to get him a trial with Liverpool FC if he appears in the school panto. For some reason, Carla Lane mashed up the show’s own history by reassigning Carmel McSharry as Beryl’s mother, Mrs. Hennessy, and Lucien as her brother. This air brushing out of Sheila Fay and Elizabeth Estensen did not go down with long standing fans and it was cancelled after seven episodes. Or perhaps the problem lay with the conceit. A Liverpool family half catholic, half protestant? Well, maybe. But half Everton, half Liverpool supporters? Oh, go ‘ed!
When Myra Taylor bowed out as co-writer, Carla Lane moved the pair into a spacious flat, allowing a wider canvas for other regulars. Two of these were John Nettles as Sandra’s boyfriend, Paul, and Jonathan Lynn as Beryl’s significant other. With a massive jump to 78 points, synthpop band Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (O.M.D) take 3rd place. The Wirral band, formed in 1978, had their first hit with Messages and went on to have many others such as anti-war hit, Enola Gay, and If You Leave. While those born outside of Liverpool may struggle to understand what we say at times, it is actually more our choice of sayings and phrases which causes this difficulty. Especially some of the Scouse put-downs that only people from Liverpool know. Elvis Costello, who sings the show’s theme, Turning the Town Red, also appears as Scully’s brother.
