About this deal

Then Sarah published Loop of Jade in 2015, along with Mona’s Small Hands and your debut physical. All these books made me feel like I could begin to write towards parts of me that I previously hadn’t thought would be seen, let alone celebrated. I remember attending a panel event at King’s College London with the American poet R. A. Villanueva where you, Sarah, Ruth Padel and Parisa Ebrahimi were speaking at, and feeling like I wanted to come up to you all afterwards to thank you for the incredible work you were doing.

Some of the neighbours forbade their kids from playing with him and his brothers because his family was Batak and Christian. He didn’t say much and only learned to read when he was finishing second grade. In front of a friend of his mother’s, the mother of one of his friends dubbed him ‘the stupid one’. His mother’s friend told his mother and when he was grown up, his mother told him. Andrew McMillan and Mary Jean Chan's luminous anthology, 100 Queer Poems, is a celebration of thrilling contemporary voices and visionary poets of the past.

Together they edited 100 Queer Poems, which publishes on 2 June 2022. In this correspondence, undertaken over spring 2022, the authors discuss the state of queer poetry in Britain. also - please do not skip the introductions! there is a real sense of comfort provided from them, especially as you move through the collection. not all of the poems are explicitly queer, but you can rest easy knowing that they are, and they were chosen for that reason. He made it into the best high school in the city – where the government officials sent their kids. His only friend from middle school started avoiding him. The bud of loneliness blossomed into first love.Physical has been translated into French, Galician and Norwegian editions, with double-editions of physical & playtime published in Slovak and German in 2022. The anthology is split into various sections, covering everything from domesticity and history to the city and nature. Vuong’s second poetry collection, Time Is A Mother, was written after the death of his mother. It’s a collection about love, family, queerness, modern American life, and many other topics.

This gorgeously titled collection, separated into two halves, is an exploration of queer lives, loves, and families.Much of the poetry in Sergius Seeks Bacchus is freeform, unrestrained by rhyme and metre as, perhaps, the lives of the queer people of Indonesia should be allowed to be. To marry his mother, his father had sold a motorbike he’d been leasing from his employer. He hopes to use the royalties from his books to marry you. I think I’d love our readers to get a sense of the vibrancy of contemporary queer poetry in the UK, how there are so many ways of writing a queer poem, and so many approaches – formally speaking – to queer poetry that goes beyond the lyric, for example. I’m also excited for the anthology to create a safe space for our readers, who might imagine themselves and their place in the world differently after reading our book. Growing up as an only child, I was rather introverted (and still am), but reading always made me feel like I was part of a larger story and a more expansive community. I remember going along to a poetry event at the Southbank Centre with someone on a date in 2014 (spoiler alert: it didn’t work out). Sitting in the audience that night, I heard poets like Jay Bernard, Mona Arshi, Sarah Howe and others take to the stage as part of the launch event for Ten: The New Wave, an anthology that grew out of the Complete Works mentoring scheme. Something shifted in me that night. A small voice in my head said, maybe you can make a way for yourself as a poet here, too.
