About this deal

Squinting (as in the case with my classmates, described above) and closing or shielding our eyes are actions that have evolved to protect the brain from “seeing” undesirable images and to communicate our disdain toward others. Arm withdrawal: When we are confident our arms tend to move conspicuously and stay to the side; when we feel threatened, our arms will move closer to our body or will cover our body. Filled with examples from Navarro's professional experience, this definitive book offers a powerful new way to navigate your world. After reading the author's "What every body is saying" I really started taking notice in body language, and that book was a very good introduction to the field for me. Or consider Chris Hughes, who used a simple gesture of respect to let him and his team walk away from an Iraqi ambush unharmed.

Commandment 9: Knowing how to distinguish between comfort and discomfort will help you to focus on the most important behaviors for decoding nonverbal communications. Discern Comfort from Discomfort: Joe Navarro says there are two main clusters you should focus on: comfort signs and discomfort signs. It is bite-sized and still comprehensive in documenting the myriad aspects of body language and their possible interpretations. If someone is talking to you but their feet are pointing away, it can mean they either don’t like you and want to disengage, or that they must go somewhere else. Notice also that we will often bend our crossed legs towards the person we like most -or the one that makes us most comfortable-. When we look away during a conversation we can do it to engage a thought, in which case it is actually a comfort display.

When Richard Nixon lied to the nation, it destroyed the respect many had for the office of the president.Joe Navarro uses a very strong example of a man who used his hands extremely well to sway and convince crowds: Adolf Hitler. Hence Joe Navarro exhorts us to do the opposite: start from the bottom, focusing on the legs and feet first. Weight Shifting: Placing hands on the knees and shifting the weight towards the foot placed in front while seated is an indication the person is ready and looking forward to getting up and leaving. It's much easier to do it with this book, since it's content is categorized from upper to lower body. A tremendous book, great complement to books like Start With Why or Talk Like Ted and probably a completely neglected starting point for building better relationships for most people.

The author confesses that even he didn't see it coming (which was refreshing), and since he goes to such great lengths to underscore how difficult lie detection is, it would have been helpful if he had provided his "hindsight" about the case of that liar extraordinaire. We purse our lips or pucker them when we are in disagreement with something or someone, or we are thinking of a possible alternative. When we do not like something we hear, whether a question or an answer, we often close our eyes as if to block out what was just heard. For instance, when people press their lips together in a manner that seems to make them disappear, it is a clear and common sign that they are troubled and something is wrong. Nonetheless, shows that the content has stuck in mind and therefore value cleaned from the 7 or so hours this book took.

Be Subtle In Observing: With practice and persistence, you will learn to observe nonverbal cues without making it obvious you’re looking for them. I highlighted some pieces that I can see using ongoing, but I was just a little disappointed in the book relative to my own expectations.
