Win at All Costs: Tracking the culture of cheating in running

The communication between employer and employee is an important aspect of organisational safety management. Nevertheless, even if employers and management have adequate information, they cannot promote safety culture without effective communication. Sports needs to be about fair play, but, more and more, it isn't. Whether it's is the great ESPN report on how the New England Patriots routinely cheated by stealing playbooks and taping signals or the federal indictments of soccer's worldwide governing body for widespread corruption, we seem to be bombarded with news about cheating. Trappe TA, White F, Lambert CP, Cesar D, Hellerstein M, Evans WJ. Effect of ibuprofen and acetaminophen on postexercise muscle protein synthesis. Am J Physiol. 2002;282(3 Part 1):E551–E6.Narcissists use emotional appeals to disguise false or outrageous claims. Since many narcissists tend to be Drama Kings or Queens, using over-the-top emotionality to control others comes naturally for them.

The hyper competitiveness in the sports quotes is also a problem when applied to business. Competition is healthy. A competitive marketplace forces improved efficiency and productivity as well as lower prices and increased choices. These contribute to an improved standard of living. But competition that goes out on the “win at all costs” limb can be destructive. There a selfishness and greediness to the “winning is everything” belief that is often counterproductive when it’s played out in the marketplace rather than on a sports field.

Developmental neuropsychology, 42(2), 104-112. The stories from elite gymnasts are a stark reminder of the presence of organisational tolerance for abuse and what happens when winning must happen at any cost. In the UK, the compromise of athlete health is clearly a step too far in the “no compromise” approach to medal table success. Slippery Slope: An appeal to fear which takes a small problem and predicts that it will lead to an escalating series of worst-case scenarios.

While Lombardi’s quote is morally challenging – and offensive to the new breed of education experts who shy from playground competition on the grounds that some kids have to lose – when it comes to sports, Lombardi is indeed correct. But the idea that “winning is everything” is not correct in business.
