Some parts of it, especially near the beginning , seem to be of a Gothic horror nature ,yet, in the middle part of the volume there is a shift towards a fantasy based romp through a dreamworld. When I first started reading Sandman, which was after I was introduced to Neil Gaiman through American Gods and Stardust, I had to interlibrary loan each volume, meaning (since I wanted to be able to keep track of them and ensure the loaning library got the books back in a timely fashion) I had to wait at least three weeks between volumes.

Comic-book publishers have grown expert at collecting individual issues of a title as graphic novels and later rereleasing those collections with hitherto unpublished sequences, further artwork, and other "bonus" material to entice buffs to purchase the same book twice and thrice.The only two which aren't clear are "Orpheus" (from Sandman Special 1) which comes after issue 31 and before Volume 5, and Fear of Falling (Vertigo Preview) which comes after issue 40 and before Volume 7. It was and will be the only comic book to have won that award as rules were changed to prevent comic books from winning thereafter. His extraordinary photo-montage covers gave each issue of the Sandman its highly individualistic look, making it impossible to miss on the stands. I complain sometimes when the cover art doesn't match the interiors, it feels like false advertising.
