About this deal

Just as Evans was actually a hard-drinking man, short on temper and long on fantasies, who left his wife to go off with her best friend and wasn't above using his fists on her, Bentley was a juvenile delinquent well before Craig came on the scene. His later statements to author David Yallop, which convinced Yallop that Goddard had wanted a reprieve, [9] appear to have been incorrectly quoted.

What took him to the gallows by making him a clear accomplice was his shout to Craig: 'Let him have it Chris' witnessed by 3 policemen. There was much political pressure to commute Bentley's sentence, including a memorandum signed by over 200 members of Parliament.

In May he was employed as a bin man by Croydon Corporation, but he was demoted to street sweeper for unsatisfactory performance. And she sets out previously unpublished evidence which refutes police accounts of the fateful night.

A real page-turner, it makes several references to Derek, and some of the arguments about his case are played out again in the novel. Even though there is extremely strong evidence that he hadn't fired the fatal shot (it was almost certainly a police marksman with a rifle), Parris was constrained from giving any evidence to that effect.

Bentley's execution comes just three months after the warehouse break-in in Croydon in which Pc Miles died. Derek William Bentley (30 June 1933 – 28 January 1953) was a British man who was hanged for the murder of a policeman during a burglary attempt. The 1990 book Let Him Have It, Chris written by M J Trow explores the inconsistencies in the police version of events.
