About this deal

Over the course of his career, John has won an Emmy, two Royal Television Society Awards, a Sony Gold Award, a What the Papers Say Journalist of the Year Award, an Amnesty International Award and the Paul Foot. It takes the reader step by step through Putin’s early life, his rise to power, his manipulation on the global stage of other world leaders, through to the invasion of the Ukraine. The book starts out with some passionate, melodramatic self-aggrandising about Sweeney's adventures in Ukraine, which could have been interesting if spun out into an examination of the present, Russia's crimes and the impact he's observed in Ukrainian society. It thrived during Yeltsin’s time in power, it was there in the background in the Soviet era and emerged into the foreground in the early 1990s in the immediate aftermath of the USSR’s demise. At its best it points to some of Putin’s most execrable traits and at its worst elevates the author to the position of the book’s leading character.

This account, which includes first hand reporting from the streets of Ukraine under siege, we travel back in time to Putin's early years (adopted? Killer in the Kremlin is a detailed and shocking account of one man’s rise from poverty to almost certainly the richest man in the world. IRYNA VENEDIKTOVA, UKRAINE'S PROSECUTOR-GENERAL * 'The evil dwarf-president is merely another one of those damn fool misfits like that scrappy little Stalin, or wee little Lenin. Sweeney has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind and controversy is nothing new to him.It gives many detailed examples of his vindictive and controlling methods and how any criticism has put people’s live at risk. I think the inclusion of these ideas (adoption and paedophilia) are important because they shaped how Putin is reacting, even if they are not true.

Sweeney poses a final question: ‘Would Vladimir Putin, knowing that he has not long to live, kill us all? It does not really add anything new to what we know about the "killer in the Kremlin" but the former BBC investigative reporter produces a devastating charge sheet against his arch nemesis. Sweeney doesn’t spell this out quite as clearly as would have been desirable, but his account of many of the key events in Russia since 1991 is invaluable, enabling readers to see the wood as well as many of the trees. Yes, there was brutality in the later stages of the war but it took the form of massive artillery shelling and aerial bombardments. He is a master at connecting the dots, though occasionally the dotted lines may be somewhat dubious. The clips were sections of a documentary the Church of Scientology's Freedom Magazine TV produced about the BBC Panorama programme. Sweeney may be correct in suggesting that Putin has been an expert conman and that his victims included former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, UK prime minister Tony Blair and the billionaire oligarch Boris Berezovsky. As far as the validity of Sweeney and his claims in the book, he has been credited as an award-winning journalist who has years of experience in the field.

Sweeney is a hard bitten, alcohol drinking experienced war correspondent and his book is a polemic account the life and rise of Vladimir Putin. The author brings nothing new about Putin on his own The book is a thinly veiled hit piece on right of center politicians. Skripal and, even more sinister, at least one completely innocent member of his family (these aren’t merely crimes, but ‘acts of war’ – p.Also, it’s notable that the Queen was made to wait only 14 minutes, a nod to the soft power of the British monarchy.
