She has a GIF for nearly everything, probably listens to too much K-Pop and is generally in an existential crisis of sorts (she's trying her best). The novel is mainly told from Nancy’s lens, alternating between the present day and flashbacks of her interactions with Jamie when they were once friends.How We Fall Apart moves fast (and it gets dark fast); it’s very much action and plot-oriented, with the engaging writing and humor I’m familiar with from Zhao’s previous novels. Zhao sheds light on the competitiveness students face in the private school sector, driven by parents and social media.

She graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in English and a minor in political science; she also completed her master’s in accounting there. That being said, there are common Asian stereotypes perpetuated in the novel – but I personally didn’t think too much of it since I assumed it was commentary. If you’re looking for a fast-paced story with a necessary investigation of academic pressure, particularly within the Asian American community, this is the one for you!What I didn't enjoy as much was the way some of the situations these characters found themselves in were too unbelievable. You are told there are secrets the lead and her 3 friends hold very early on (five of them) and you know they’ll come out.
