Any Jackie Walker book has me chuckling, there is always funny inner dialogue and group chats so even when the story is tackling serious issues there is also some humour at other times to provide balance). Even though he loved her he missed his chance to get his girl before he knew it she was gone from his world for good. Use of a military backstory is a shortcut for authors to create camaraderie among men and I think it's a bit lazy at times. I liked how the characters acknowledged from early on that they both had feelings for eachother (and for a while as well from Sawyer’s POV, would have been interested to see when Sammy started developing feelings).

I will say several people are dead, several seriously injured, a few minor injuries and Redleg has a whole lot of explaining to do to authorities. After finding out what happens on missions, she bans Leo from going on any more missions, but he disobeys and goes on a mission with his siblings. There are some bits where the internal monologue gets confused between the character and the authors voice but not so often that I found it distracting. Leo's sister, Sammy, is a strong woman, trying to find herself after leaving an extremely abusive relationship and start her life again. And as Sammy moves on with Sawyer, the communication relating to overcoming sexual trauma and safe ways to explore power dynamics in a therapeutic way were really refreshing.The way Sawyer knows what Sammy needs, how he gently brings her with him but still protects her is book boyfriend perfection. It also covers some issues that might trigger some readers and it certainly had me on the edge of my seat at times, not knowing what was going to happen next. The small snag, because there's always one, comes from the fact that Sawyer is the best friend of Sammy's older brother, and now her bodyguard. Can't wait to see how the next couple work through their issues since she almost died protecting the girl in this book. They’ve successfully thwarted his first two attempts to kidnap her, but looky here, she’s pitched a trantrum and run from their care.

This book is currently available in Discreet and Original (man cover) paperback, as well as this ebook. Sawyer and Sammy are attracted to each others but don’t want to cross that line because of Leo and her past. I don't know if this is her style or specific to this story, but the jokes and puns were only fun for a little while. It is really hard to suspend disbelief when you read about private citizens armed to the teeth literally flash banging someone's apartment and disappearing them.Chase tells Caitlin that Outsiders are not allowed onto the Island, even though those like Perry's Niece Kerry already have. As a romantic suspense, there are a few moments of violence, including gun violence, related to the plot. Fantasy worlds are culturally rich places and this gives a lot of possible interpretations to each icon. It is to combat this ignorance of solo play, how it works and how to do it that means I put this in the front of every rule book.
