naturally aspirated engines), late 1960s and early 1970s (Can-Am and sportscar racing were both more spectacular than F1 at around this time, and it is no coincidence that Le Mans was filmed in 1970), to name a few time periods. Originally from Altrincham, Simon Arron grew up near Oulton Park, writing and photographing club races for the local newspaper and subsequently Motoring News, until he was taken on as a full-time reporter in 1982. Until 1984 the championship was an open series for manufacturers of different chassis, engines and tyres. No one would settle for WEC Champion or Australian Supercars champion, Indy Cars Champion, Japanese Super Formula Champion or Formula E Champion if they had a realistic shot at the F1 title.

A must-read for completists or for those new to the sport, F1: The Pinnacle is a fascinating insight into one of the most exciting and dangerous sports in the world. The key events that have taken Formula 1 from its makeshift beginnings to the exhilarating high-octane spectacle it is today at the pinnacle of motorsport.Along with changes to circuits and the technology of the cars, this book highlights the commercial changes and the controversies that threatened to split the sport apart – such as the threat of breakaway series proposed at various times by teams.

I think this book is fantastic for anyone remotely interested in F1, whether you’ve been a fan forever or maybe just recently got into the sport like myself. It's involved without being overwhelming with jargon or missed context that would leave a reader confused; each section is approachable even if you jump twenty pages forward.
