About this deal

Her day-to-day activities – walking round the island, dropping stones down an old abandoned mineshaft, tending to the petrol-driven generator that gives her electricity, listening to the radio while eating or drinking several cups of tea – give her life its structure. Jenkin mentions in the disc extra that his original idea was to mix the film in mono (which would have been period-appropriate for 1973) but thought that was too thin. Haunters of the Deep (1984, 61 mins): a Children’s Film Foundation adventure that shares many of the same West Cornwall locations as Enys Men, and made quite an impression on its director. Jenkin also composed the film's entrancing lo-fi drone score, now available on red vinyl LP via Invada Records. The woman looks into a bedroom and is unsurprised to see a dark-haired girl (played by Flo Crowe) sleeping there.

The flower which the Volunteer is studying begins to grow a strange lichen, which, she soon finds, is growing on her too. A wildlife volunteer’s (Mary Woodvine) daily observations of a rare flower take a dark turn into the strange and metaphysical, forcing both her and viewers to question what is real and what is nightmare. That film had a contemporary setting and was shot in black and white, while this has a period setting and is in colour. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. An ancient, healing hymn sung by a ghost vicar (John Woodvine) makes this widespread, culturally profound loss cohere. The LP comes housed in a spined sleeve printed on beautiful reverse board, with double sided printed insert and download card. In the BFI season he curated, of some of the influences on Enys Men (its DNA, as he put it), Jenkin showed Roeg’s first solo feature, Walkabout, which was the first Roeg film he ever saw, possibly because it was the only one of Roeg’s great run in the 1970s and first half of the 1980s which wasn’t adults-only.

Also in the film is Mary Woodvine’s father, John Woodvine, ninety-one years old at the time of production and five years after his previous screen appearance. It reminds me a lot of Nicolas Roeg’s classic horror Don’t Look Now, especially the use of primary colours and the way it approaches the viewer and asks them to interpret the film. Recently we’ve had films like The Witch, Hagazussa, and In The Earth that have expanded the genre, and now Enys Men, directed by Mark Jenkin, who made the acclaimed film Bait.
