Wow… this book is a bunch of some old-fashioned rubbish from someone who doesn’t have the emotional competence to advise parents. I was beyond desperate, had not slept for longer than 2-3hrs in any 24hour period and had postnatal depression.

He really was the quintessential ‘good baby’ I don’t think it would have mattered if he was demand or routine. Of course, I realised that the reality could be different as different babies would react differently to routines, but it still gave me peace of mind to have some structure to the approach.

I think there is some valuable information in this book for new parents, such as things you need to get before your baby arrives, but you can also find this info for free anywhere on the internet.

For example, when R was still recovering from her C-section and was absolutely drained, it made no sense for her to be hindering her recovery, getting up during the night and lumping baby over to the changing table for a new nappy and to do a drawn out feed. For me, this book eliminated a lot of anxiety because I liked having some sort of guideline to aim for.Now it turns out that my uncle and aunt actually used routines from the Contented Little Baby Book way back when my cousins were babies. The aim of the routines is not to push your baby through the night without a feed, but to ensure that by structuring the feeding and sleeping during the day, your baby’s night-time waking will be kept to a minimum. Gina Ford’s Contented Little Baby routine is so well known, rightly or wrongly, that it was the first actual baby book that I added to my reading list. This is a book that’s meant to explain how routines can ultimately benefit your child and your entire family.

In summary, I think that Gina makes some very good points and is quite clearly is very experienced with babies and childcare. Never before has a book about parenting divided opinion as much as this one: The New Contented Little Baby Book by Gina Ford. Gina lays out her weekly and then monthly plans designed for the needs of your developing baby at each stage. A friend of mine read it and declared she was either going to burn it or give it to me if I was curious.

I did find many points within the book useful, namely that fact that it’s OK to wake up your sleeping baby. Even at the time, I found certain suggestions such as ironing your baby's sheets (which will only be pissed/shat/puked on within 24 hours) absurd. While I was in hospital midwives advised giving water in a bottle to baby so he would not become dehydrated and it was the midwives that gave him his first bottle of formula because he wouldn’t breastfeed.
