Coming home is hard work and often looks like being stripped bare, raw, peeling away pretense and exposing the lies we’ve believed about ourselves. Because sometimes feeling right, after feeling so wrong for so long, is the hardest thing to get used to. This will be a soulful journey to rediscover yourself and align with your heart, your truth, your beliefs, your worth, your values and who you truly are. Members learn to befriend themselves and deepen self-trust, and show up fully to their messy and beautiful lives with freedom, health, and joy. At times I envision the process of coming home as a journey through rivers and valleys, over mountain tops and through forest.

This teaching is excerpted from her new book, We Were Made for These Times , which will be published by Parallax Press in October. There are numerous ways we can go home to ourselves: by being aware of our breath, by being aware of body sensations or bodily movements, and by connecting with the reality around us, like the sounds in our environment. I want to shake off any remnants of oppression that cling to me before I step into the next season of my life. Just to have the awareness of being unsettled and the desire to feel whole is enough to alert our inner voice to begin teaching us the way.

We can’t find what we need to meet tomorrow or a month from now because we can’t control or exactly know the future, but we will find what we need for right now. Some people become addicted to becoming spiritual athletes, believing that if they meditate for longer and longer periods each day, endure fasts, and chant non-stop, they will attain enlightenment.

The center of the nest can remain empty allowing room for whatever would like to come back to you, or you can place a symbol like a stone in your nest to as place markers. Initially I assumed it was just a side effect of moving around, or not having a partner or family of my own, but as those boxes were ticked and the feeling remained, it became clear that that wasn’t it either. In essence, we are electing to grow up and stop finding fault with everyone and everything “out there. We find ourselves and forget our way, life transitions and seasonal shifts invite us to begin again. Ultimately, shadow work marks the beginning of the end and is a turning point on the spiritual path.With the advent of global travel, the idea of homesickness, however, became almost juvenile—something children experience at camp perhaps—and the notion that ‘home’ is more of a feeling than a place lost credibility altogether.
