About this deal

I’m not a fan of love triangles in stories because I think it’s a clichéd and heavily overused plot-device, but luckily it didn’t feature heavily in the story and so it didn’t bother me too much. Yazmina’s situation is truly pitiable and I have to admit I didn’t realise the difficulties that widows faced as well. The author did an excellent job of bringing forth the ongoing problem of the oppression of women in Afghanistan.

The sights, sounds, smells, and tensions of Kabul make the city become another character In A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez. While reading the novel, I felt love and sympathy for three of the main characters, Sunny, Yazmina and Halajan. She wasn’t always a sympathetic or likable character but I feel as though she did have a very interesting story, probably quite a bit more interesting than Sunny’s and I wanted more of it.I’m going to be honest, when I realised that three of the five central characters were either from the US or the UK, I inwardly cringed. The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened.

I am a big crier with books but yet I didn't shed a tear with this book when I would have if I had cared enough about the characters. The cafe needs to make money and so Sunny hosts a kind of event night where they invite women to come and speak. Yazmina now runs a pair of women's shelters from the old cafe, and dreams of a bright future for her two young daughters. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The novel is centered around the “Kabul Coffee House” in Afghanistan right in the middle of a war zone.

I guess if you are a Romance reader that enjoys a book about Western women finding true love with war camp followers of the military or learning a life lesson about advancing their own careers and usefulness without a boyfriend's love, depending on the character (except the one Western woman who is strong and principled from the start, no boyfriends, who gets killed off) while experiencing exotic sights and sounds that lightly touch their conscious minds so that sometimes they want to organize a meeting, this will be a five star read for you.I was looking for something to read yesterday and decided it was finally time to give this one a go. Her sister Layla has become an outspoken women's rights activist and, thanks to social media, is quite the celebrity. There’s the barista as well, who doubles as the man who makes sure that everyone checks their weapons when they enter and looks out for Sunny’s safety. The fact that so much is based on the horrific reality of Afghanistan and the incredible people who live there in fear of their lives every moment of the day makes the story even more compelling.

One part of the voice I felt was imprtant was that the author expressed the frustrations of the Afghan people being 'helped' and treated like children by other countries and foreign based NGOs. Another was the big change that one of the male characters makes towards the end of the book, with a few of our readers feeling this happened very quickly. We see the reality of inhabiting a place filled with unrest, where women are still forced to walk a careful tightrope every day. With a message…to protect and empower the women of Kabul, Rodriguez weaves her tale of life, death, and marriage…Readers will appreciate the in-depth, sensory descriptions of this oft-mentioned and faraway place that most have never seen.and "The smells of dung and sweat and spices and diesel exhaust fumes merged into a heady mix that reminded Sunny why she loved Kabul and why she'd chosen to stay. Issues with the young woman's sister, and adult son's internal dialogue about what is right, and the safety of a fatherless infant. She aims to rescue the women of Afghanistan that are being thrown in prison for crimes such as denying men sex or looking at the wrong man in the wrong way.
