The DUP, Sinn Féin, the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), and the SDLP are considered the four major political parties in Northern Ireland, holding the most seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly. This system of government, known as the Westminster system, has been adopted by other countries, especially those that were formerly parts of the British Empire. The additional member system is used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, Senedd, and London Assembly.
