As far as Batman is concerned - by the early 1940's he'd pretty much already been cemented as this reasonably light-hearted hero who nonetheless participated mostly in noir-ish crime/detective adventures and fought the iconic villains.Although the casting decision surprised many, the film was a massive success, spawning a wave of Bat-merchandise the likes of which had not been seen since 1966. These 1956-1958 Batman and Detective Comics stories came just a little before I started reading DC comics, but give the real flavour of the Batman and Robin et al. The focus is on Bat-villains, so if the character is from someone else's rogues gallery (like Weather Wizard) they won't make it in but if the character is a general villain (like Solomon Grundy) they will.

Plus a greater amount of science fiction weirdness (although Batman always had sci-fi weirdness--starting with Dr. The entire superhero genre benefited from the show’s success, but declining ratings led to its cancellation after just three seasons. By 1938 he was selling humorous filler stories to DC Comics, including Professor Doolittle and Ginger Snap.
