About this deal

My verdict on this book is that I wanted to like it more than I did because I think Alex North tried too hard to top his other books.

Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy and Cookie Statement and Your California Privacy Rights. In total transparency, I did enjoy North’s The Whisper Man and The Shadows a bit more than this one, but that’s not to say this isn’t an amazing story that ABSOLUTELY gripped me! A night shift routing controller who works for the freight rail system is approached by an older gentleman who helps her change a tire. Alan Hobbes, a professor who teaches fate and free will has been murdered in his home hours after telling his staff that he no longer needs them. Alex North is always going to be one of my immediate auto-read authors after stunning me with his debut, THE WHISPER MAN!You know the sort: those people who can make people disappear, cover up situations, appease the police. Angelmaker is an adventure story, a spy thriller, old-fashioned gangster noir and black comedy rolled into one with a hint of satire for good measure. His client, Edie Banister, is more than the kindly old lady she appears to be—she’s a retired international secret agent.

Throughout the book, Joe is pulled back and forth between his father and grandfather, wanting to do the "right" thing but discovering that the world no rewards him for following the rules. The characters really needed more development because they are introduced to the reader and you don’t get enough time to become acquainted with them before moving on to the next.

Because characterisation is not set in stone in those stories they can be elaborated on upon their telling. Little does Joe know that only is his Dad not the criminal he thought he was, but his Grandmother is involved in something far bigger than Joe could ever imagine. I felt bad for Chris but could not connect with him without there being more chapters dedicated to his pov.
