About this deal

I know Megan's work well, so I was unsurprised to find that the verse in this book is utterly gorgeous--simple, understated free verse that is, at the same time, incredibly powerful. I loved it, and am happy to shelve it alongside childhood favorites like Hatchet and Island of the Blue Dolphins and My Side of the Mountain.

The ending was a good one and squeezed my heart but that also took me out of it a tiny bit (not enough to downrate the book ). He doesn't want to lose his hair, or wear a weird hat, or deal with the disappearing friends who don't know what to say to "the cancer kid".But that was before the night in November 1922, and the cruel act that took her home and her father from her. I see the jocks stretching in their muscle shirts and think about how their shoulder blades look like vultures’ wings trying to tear free. Also, there are a lot of animal deaths by starvation and one cruel violent death to a cat all of which were pretty upsetting. Alone is a novel in verse that tells the story of Maddie, a 12 year old who lives between her mother and father's house in a small town in Colorado. Throughout the long, dark Antarctic winter, Shackleton fights for his life and the lives of his men - enduring freezing temperatures, a perilous lifeboat journey through the ice-strewn sea, and a punishing march across the South Georgia glaciers to seek the one slim chance they have of rescue.

When Stella and her younger brother, Tom, move to their new London home, they become mystified by the disappearances of Harry, their elderly neighbor's small dog. After waking up she sees everyone is gone, not one person left, and she at first figures they will be back, but as days pass she needs to learn to survive. This book is a modern retelling of Island of the Blue Dolphins, and fans of that book will find that it's faithful to the original in many significant ways.

Nora longs for things to go back to normal, like they were when her mother was still alive, while her father keeps them isolated in fear of other people. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world. Schreiber makes a concise intervention into isolation studies with Alone, writing not about what causes increasing numbers of people to live alone, but about the particular joys of solitude, the warmth of rare bonds of friendship, and the opportunity to contemplate and confront the hard edges of one’s own self . With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe.
