So, when I decided last month to get back into tarot reading, I first thought of the Magickal Tarot, and found out it was out of print (d'oh!

The painter Frieda Harris was herself an Egyptologist and worked about 1200 symbols into the 78 cards! I am currently reading a separate book on the Crowley Tarot deck, but recently realized that I had not read the guidebook that came with the deck yet.

Crowley Thoth Tarot has attracted a worldwide following, both for its striking beauty and for its complex depiction of occult knowledge. For those students interested in the Golden Dawn, or in esoteric imagery, this is a wonderful deck to study. For the Major Arcana, the Roman numeral is centered at the top of the card, with the card title, astrological glyph and Hebrew letter, at the bottom. In decks with more straight-forward images, such as those in the Osho Zen deck (which I used to use in readings), I always felt my readings were too generalized.

I bought these as I was lead to believe they were the regular size, in the description, they are not! For example, the 8 of Disks shows small bright violet flowers against a lemon yellow background and the 6 of Wands shows red and yellow wands arranged against a delicate lilac background. Some may not reccommend it for beginners because of the Thoth's heavy ties to Egyptian spirituality, Astrology, and the Kabbalah. I still know nothing about the Kabbalah, and very little of the Egyptian references, but do not feel that my readings suffer because of it. All of the cards are full of energy, life and detail and it is possible to see something new in each card every time that it is looked at.

Very little is said about reading the cards themselves, though it does give a spread that seems more intuitive than ones I've seen before. Harris used Synthetic Projective Geometry and influences referring to "art deco", also drawing on the Kabbalah, numerology, astrology, and knowledge of the Egyptian religion. The deck can of course be used without these systems, but I have found studying them to be immensely rewarding personally, as well as to my knowledge of the tarot. Which is the novelty of this deck, but there is a great deal behind why these cards are designed this way and it's barely touched upon.Crowley accepted the Golden Dawn's changed names of all the court cards which can cause some confusion for people used to the more common decks. A King riding a horse is now a feature I look for in a tarot deck when adding to my collection irrespective of the title given to him. For the Pips (numbered cards), the number in Arabic numerals is at the top of the card, with the esoteric title at the bottom of the card.
