Yes, it was funny, but it was also sometimes touching, sometimes poignant, and even thought provoking.

The only character I found enteraining to read from was Oscar and even he got old after several long chapters. Dora is a nightmare daughter who truly believes she knows everything, hates and abuses everyone and leaves obscene messages on her mother's phone. Well it does happen (don’t worry) but you will have to stay focused on the book and not give it up because I have seen some bad reviews and I wonder why people didn’t get to the real depth of the book.

Dora has no idea what she is going to do post high school (academics are not her strong suit), she’s just been dumped by her first real boyfriend and she regularly employs a creative if rather rude string of adjectives to describe her mother. Others have documented the style: it's a sort of modern take on the epistolary form, with different characters narrating each chapter in the first-person. Dora is a rebel full of teenage angst, hates her family, except her dad, and feels life is altogether very unfair. The ploy of keeping the 2 "heroes" - Nan; the quiet, constant, wisdom of experience and Dad; the voiceless, much-derided, barely present figure very much in the background definately worked for me and revealing the latters name only with the very last word of the book was tear-jerkingly poignant. The story follows certain events in the lives of Mo, who is about to turn 50 and hovering on the edge of an extra-marital affair with a younger man. I didn't manage to read the whole thing, because I just couldn't cope with the exaggeration of teen Dora and the not-so-believeable Mo.I thought the characterisation of these characters was excelent and I ended up really caring about them. Naturally there's a wise and all-knowing grandmother whom all of them love and turn to for advice, a woman who manages to be hip while remaining empathic and right there with the home-baked goodies (recipes at the end of the book!
