History: Years ago, when I was just starting out as a winemaker, it was almost unheard of to get French oak wine barrels and American oak barrels, were for whisky, not wine. If you give it some air in the glass by swirling, this red wine reveals a high viscosity, which is evident in strong church windows at the edge of the glass. Batch 34, in another spectacular California vintage, Winemaker Bob Blue drew on a base of dry-farmed, head-trained Zinfandel vines from Mendocino County to craft this nuanced red. Zinfandel flavors of strawberry, raspberry, dark cherry and violet are complemented by notes of vanilla bean, coconut oil, caramel, white pepper and dry herbs. Juicy notes of cherry, plum and cassis are balanced by a savory hint of smoked meat, culminating in a burnt-sugar finish.

of this blend comes from select parcels of old-vine, head-trained Zinfandel grown in Mendocino County, where some families’ vines date to the 1880’s. With its present fruit acidity, the 1000 Stories Zinfandel presents itself wonderfully fresh and lively on the palate. In addition, Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel (5%) balances out the batch with its complex black fruits and a distinct black pepper spice.
