You can sand the yellowing tint off the white paint using 400-grit sandpaper. The sanding will scrub the paint and remove the tint over it. However, this works only for dried yellow stains or spots.

Cleaning up is a cinch, too. Given the great sheen and decent coverage, you may be surprised to hear that this satinwood paint is actually water-based, meaning brushes and rollers can be cleaned with just soapy water.Durability - typically, oil-based paints are more durable, allowing more resistance to wear and tear Dulux Trade Eggshell is touch dry in 4-6 hours, has an excellent coverage of up to 17m2 per litre and leaves a professional finish that lasts much longer than others on the market without yellowing. This is crucial if you are using a white eggshell, which is particularly prone to this over time. Another huge plus is that it is self-undercoating which can be a real help, especially for the average DIY'er.

Grease and Stains – Cooking grease, food stains, and drink spills can turn white paint to yellow. If you spill drink or grease over paint and don’t wipe it off immediately, the colorants in the grease will stain the paint and make it yellow.UV Exposure– The paint will turn yellow if the paint is exposed to UV rays (sun). This happens if the paint is sealed with a clear coat that doesn’t have UV-resistant additives. The UV rays will make the clear coat appear yellow but don’t affect the paint underneath. To fix it, remove the clear coat and apply a UV-resistant sealer (such as exterior polyurethane) over the paint.

First created in the 1870s it was for some time a rival to lead and zinc white oil paints. During this time it captured 60% of the market for white pigments in 1928. By 1945 this demand had decreased to 15% due to the dominance of titanium dioxide (the main pigment included in titanium white). As Zinc White has become less popular due to its brittleness when it is used extensively (you can read more about that later), there is a renewed interest in Porcelain White as they have some similar characteristics. It has also been known historically as Enamel, Orr’s, or Charleston White but the name Porcelain White has been chosen by Williamsburg as the most descriptive. It is crucial when explaining what eggshell paint is to put it into context. Paint comes in a range of finishes that vary in terms of their 'sheen', otherwise known as the amount of light they reflect. The more sheen a paint has, the more durable it is. This is why gloss and satin is often used on woodwork and metal as these areas are prone to scuffs, while lower sheen paints are used on interior walls & ceilings. These finishes include matt, eggshell, silk, soft sheen, satin & gloss. This satinwood paint from Leyland is an excellent all-rounder. Suitable for almost all projects, it’s easy to use, long-lasting and durable. While it will need two coats to get the fullest coverage, a little goes a very long way, and as you don’t need to use primer, it’s great for those on a budget. You need a natural bristle paintbrush to apply oil-based gloss, otherwise the paint will clog within half an hour or so. Your best bet is the Hamilton Perfection, which is an oil-school brush, but still a favourite amongst Decorators. You will be able to apply gloss paint and lay it off with ease. Available online here. Interior walls that are powdery, are stained or are suffering from salt migration must also be primed as this will affect the paints ability to perform. A primer such a Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 is perfect for priming these bare plastered walls ready to paint. PaintTraditionally oil-based paints were favoured for woodwork and other parts of interior and exterior trim, although today many opt for water-based paints as the technology has caught up with the quality of oil-based paints in recent years. Flow - many decorators prefer working with an oil-based paint as they can offer a better flow on the paint brush, which leads to a neater finish Moisture– Moisture (water) can cause white paint to turn yellow. If the paint is exposed to constant water (such as a water leak), the particles and minerals in the water will stain the white paint and cause it to turn yellow. Sometimes, the paint can turn brown too. Water vapor and steam can also cause a yellow tint on the paint. This is common with oil-based paints applied in the kitchen. Turpentine is a solvent made from tree resin, and white spirit is a petroleum-based solvent. Just like when we discussed white spirit and methylated spirits all those words ago, turpentine and white spirit can be used for the same tasks. Most people prefer using either turpentine, white spirit or methylated spirit, but the choice is yours, really. Turpentine is stronger than both of these alternatives, though. So extra care is needed when thinning the paint with it. Other than that, though, white spirit and turpentine do the same job. They are just made from different things. White spirit alternativeMake sure you use always high-quality paint brushes for the best results, as you really do get what you pay for when it comes to decorating tools. For oil-based paints, natural bristle brushes are the best to use. For water-based paints, you must use a synthetic bristle brush as natural bristle paint brushes absorb moisture and therefore will not apply a water-based paint properly. It feels as though Johnstone’s Aqua gloss has much more oil in it than Teknos Futura 90. You cannot simply wash a brush out with clean water, as you would with other systems. Instead, you should start off with water, then finish washing out with a product called Clean Spirit. Once again it can be mixed in any colour, including Dulux, RAL & British Standard colours. While white is by far the most popular shade for woodwork such as doors and skirting boards, the use of colour has become increasingly popular. It is also ideal for painting furniture, where its ability to be mixed in any colour can allow you to let your imagine go wild. It’s hard-wearing, easy to clean and usually very straightforward to use. While it’s most commonly found in only one or two shades of white, some brands offer a wider range of colours, giving you the option to truly personalise your space.
