About this deal

To put things into perspective I thought I’d compare which camera is better for shooting in the present day. Although there are many different things that we might compare, I thought this would be fair, the MJU I has a fixed focal length, it’s similar in standard to the L35AF but it’s a much more sleek design, until recently these cameras were also very similar in value. Nikon L35 AF Camera Olympus MJU I Camera To change the ISO there is a small ring around the lens which you have to rotate, you will see the ISO number change in a small window as you rotate it, some L35AFs go to 400 and some go to 1000, the 1000 ISO camera is slightly more desirable. Nikon L35AF - a mini review - by Giacomo Zema - 35mmc

Reading some of the other comments on here. I have a Fuji DL300 and that is a fine compact. That, along with the Nikon & a Minolta AFZ, are probably my favourite point and shoots. I’m a big 60s/70s rangefinder fan and generally grab one of those for a pleasurable film photography experience. The L35AF does this, too, but at a fraction of the price. The best way I can describe its look is a razor, surgical sharpness, especially at the center, with a bit of a boost to contrast, and just a tiny hint of vignetting when shot wide open. But really great cameras have a distinctive look and feel that’s true to the scene, but also somehow enhances it. Leica is famous for this (Google “Leica look”), and it’s why I use their cameras almost exclusively for my digital work (and pay accordingly for them). Speaking of the batteries, they are a pain to eject from the camera. The cover under which they’re hosted (at the bottom) is not well-made. It’s identical to that of the Pentax PC35AF — another great point-and-shoot with limited flaws — which comes with flimsiness but also requires you to shake your Nikon violently until the first one pops out. This was my experience; I hope yours isn’t as bad. Image quality with the Canon AF35M is a mixed bag. Where the Nikon L35AF tends to be uniformly excellent, image quality with the Canon ranges from great to substandard, depending on shooting conditions. In bright light and at smaller apertures the Canon is comparable to the Nikon’s stellar performance. Contrast, color, and all the rest are excellent in these well-lit situations. It’s when things get dark that the Canon begins to fall behind. The only other feature is a self timer, I didn’t use it, but it is activated by the red switch that lights up when switched on the front of the camera. The other switch located under the lens turns the camera on and opens the lens door. The Nikon AF3 in use The ASA/ISO ranges between 50-1000. Now, when the film is loaded properly, turn on your camera facing the lens and change the ISO that you wish to shoot on. You can do it by rotating the circle on your lens. Let’s jump right in – the lens isn’t that prone to flare I’ve found, still I use a (cheap & cheerful) screw-in hood most of the time – because it just looks cool and also protects the lens – I like to avoid UV filters if possible. With the Nikon L35af, the attraction seems a little less obvious to me. Yes it is a camera with a wonderfully simple level of function that does indeed make you wonder what else you could need from a point & shoot. Its classic 80’s design is pretty cool and it has the provenance of being Nikons first AF point & shoot. But, perhaps above all of this, the lens is lovely – that is of course if you appreciate the look of the photos in the way I do…?

The Nikon AF3 has a total of two buttons, two switches and two LEDs. To say it is a basic camera would be an understatement. But adorning the front of this more-than-basic camera is a 35mm 2.8 lens, made by Nikon, with macro written under it… That alone made it seem promising, so I thought I would run a film through it to see how it faired. By sharing my blog posts and social media content, you help me reach a wider audience and inspire more people to explore the analog world. How did I mess things up? It seems that if the lighting in a scene requires a long exposure, the photographer needs to hold the shutter release button down for the duration of the exposure, rather than press and release the button. Since there’s no way to tell how long the shutter will remain open, it’s important to be aware of this weird functionality when shooting in low-light and remember to listen for the shutter to close before releasing the button. This can be a little annoying, but it beats using a flash when trying to achieve naturally lit, low-light images. The self-timer is ideal for group or self-portrait shots. To use the self-timer, you will need to pull the lever as far as it will go and depress the shutter button. This causes the self-timer to light up. After 10 seconds, you will hear that the shutter is released. To cancel, return the lever to its original position before the shutter release button is depressed completely. Shooting with the L35 is great, it fits in my hand like it was made for it and performs smoothly. on that note the autofocus is fast and accurate, it uses wisely the aperture to control the depth of field, granting consistent results. If there was one complaint I saw with these images, is that some of them seem to have harsh contrast. I think that’s more of an issue with the film, than the camera however.

Nikon L35AF – Pikaichi - Photo Thinking - Camera Review

The L35AF is a phenomenal camera with a beautifully retro aesthetic, many tried to replicate the look but they all failed. I have always loved shooting with this camera and my main reservations are the size, price and potential faults it may have. Lens: 35mm f/2.8 with autofocus from 0.8m to infinity. It had 5 elements in 4 groups. 46mm filter thread. People love the MJU II. It’s a great camera, too, but I find its photos a bit flat and boring. They’re passable, but the camera doesn’t read any of its own style into them at all. I’m an editorial photographer, so I’m not looking for a Lomography camera or something like that — my photos always have to be totally accurate. The hardest part to get going on L35AD2 is installing the CR2032 battery to power its mostly useless date feature that would burn digits into your photos. It only shows years up to 2019, thus if you really want that on your film, it may make the most sense to just show the day of the month and time. My copy also had all of that in Japanese. Though it may not look or feel as good as Olympus Mju II , L35AD2 can still provide plenty of comfort with its built-in hand grip and loads of confidence with its interactive viewfinder (more on that later). Nikon took the film-advance stripes straight out of Canon Canonet QL17 GIII ’s design book and paired it with motorized film transport . Unnecessary yet amusing.

But it does make the flash vulnerable. I found that over time, the little release system for mine stopped working. I lost some shots in the dark because the flash tried to release, but didn’t actually raise or charge. Be warned if yours is an older camera and you plan to shoot in low light. If you enjoy my blog and want to help me continue creating content, there are several ways you can support me: To unload the L35AF of film you need to do it manually, on the bottom of the camera there are two switches, one to press in and one to push sideways, do this and hold the buttons until the camera rewinds the whole way, I usually wait around 30 seconds to feel happy that it is fully done. Using self-timer This camera is not intended for those on a tight budget, but it is great for beginners who want to start exploring film photography, as well as more experienced photographers.

The viewfinder itself is fine though, mines a little on the dusty side, but actually is quite nice and bright otherwise. The self timer Another pleasing feature of the lens is the position of the light meter. The camera will accept a filter, and since the light meter sensor is inside the area covered by the meter, any filters added to the camera will have the relevant affect on the meter. I’ve worked with many Nikon L35 AF, AF2 and AF3 cameras over the years and I’ve discovered the quality of this retro beauty. It’s a mixed bag, with some common issues and amazing shots, it’s well worth finding out if it’s worth trying one out.
