About this deal

Texas Tough wears its name on its sleeve, but don't think this blend is only optimum for the Lone Star State. It will take its drought-resistant, insect-resistant qualities to any state in the American South, where Bermudagrass is known to grow. It comes in a large 10 kg bag which can cover an area of approximately 200 m²; however, if that sounds like too much, it will also keep for the next year as well, so any that you don’t use won’t be wasted.

You can use this to start a new lawn or to overseed a patchy existing lawn, but either way, proper preparation is crucial to get the best results. That means raking the soil to loosen it and removing any dead grass or other debris, applying the seed evenly (ideally with a spreader, not by merely tossing out handfuls of seed), gently raking the seed into the soil, and watering daily to keep the soil moist—not soggy—until the seedlings are at least 2 inches high. Ideally, you should plant this seed in either the spring or the fall, when temperatures are between 60 and 80 degrees F.Consider laying straw or hay over the area afterward to prevent the loss of seed from birds and washouts from rain. Whether you are starting a new lawn from seed or overseeding an existing lawn to keep it looking green through the winter, it's crucial to understand your climate and the particular qualities of your yard before choosing the best grass seed. Otherwise, you could end up with disappointing results. Many lawns are made up of a seed mix, rather than a single variety. ‘Seed mixtures are generally a blend of species to suit most lawns and guarantee a better strike rate,’ says Hedges Gower. But aside from this, cleaning your yard and disposing of dog poop regularly will help keep your grass healthier.

Planting: Care must be taken not to cover the seed with too much soil—no more than 1/4 in. of soil covering the seed is recommended. Effective methods include broadcasting by hand or using seed spreaders, followed by light roller or dragging. Because of the high seed count of Texas Tough per lb., the seed should be mixed thoroughly with dry sand at a ratio of 5 parts sand to one part seed, and the spreader opened only 1/16 to 1/8 in. Lily Anderson is a writer at Bauer Media, where she tests products for titles such as Heat, Closer, What’s the Best and Mother&Baby When to Plant: Recommended planting time is spring and summer when nighttime temperatures are consistently 65+ degrees and 3 months prior to first frost. First of all, you should regularly patrol and clean your yard, as a build-up of pet waste can cause a number of very serious health problems for your dog and your family (as well as potentially attract coyotes). On the other hand, if your lawn is shady or only receives a few hours of direct sun each day, Brian Feldman, senior director of technical operations at TruGreen makes these recommendations: "If you are planting grass in a shaded area, choose a grass seed mixture that is designed specifically for those conditions. The best lawn grass mixtures for shade in cool areas should contain tall fescue, fine fescue, and a small amount of perennial ryegrass. In warmer climates, St. Augustine or Zoysia are good choices."Browntop Bent isn’t as commonly found in hardwearing grass seed mixes, but it can make be included because it helps make lawns fine and soft. A small percentage of Browntop Bent, such as the 5% found in the GBW 1 kg Grass Seed, will add some finer, short grass to your lawn.
