About this deal

D Make the length of line between snoods long enough so that the two hooks do not touch, and therefore do not tangle. The metal crimps (or the stop knots) are necessary to fixate the distance between the snoods and prevent them from sliding up or down the rig body, and the beads are there to protect the crimps and increase their durability.

Personally, I only use the flapper rig when I have more than one rod (Which I usually do). I tie the 2-hooks version of this rig on one rod, and another rig (Generally the fish finder rig), on the other rods. Logically, bigger baits mean heavier baits. Heavier baits should afford greater enhancement of the rig’s function, and even fewer tangles. This all seems true to a certain extent, but having fished donkey-choker hookbaits years ago, I feel compelled to issue a mild warning to big-bait virgins. A boilie of 24mm or larger can cause all sorts of issues in terms of your rig surviving the cast unscathed. The large diameter of the hookbait results in a much bigger impact as the rig hits the surface, and in this case can cause the silicone to move, kink the hooklink, and undermine the TLC already applied during careful construction. Then again, a boat drop circumvents this, so if rules allow rig drops, it’s not an issue. The flapper rig is one of the most popular line setups for surf fishing. With a smart design that allows casting multiple hooks at once, this rig offers systematically a higher bite per cast ratio and adds more exciting moments to fishing trips.

Most Popular

I don’t know why exactly, but it’s probably because lures require more line work and animation, which is not an easy thing to do when many snoods and hooks are attached.

Secondly, the shape of the pyramid sinker allows it to burrow into the bottom of sandy areas in the surf, which is very effective for anchoring the rig in strong tides. And for absolute maximum casting range - particularly with long droppers on the rig, nothing will beat the loop rig version. Deploying 2-3 hooks at the first sandbar during the first hour of your fishing trip may give you a bunch of small progies and breams that you can use later to catch sizeable reds or blues. Welcome to Angling Active's Beach Fishing Rigs category, where we bring you the tools to master the art of coastal angling. Our carefully curated selection of beach fishing rigs is designed to maximize your success when casting from the shore, helping you reel in prized catches from the surf. For uncomplicated short and middle range casting from piers and beaches and for a host of species, the two-hook flapper is hard to beat. With 2-3 hooks spinning around, the flapper rig makes it possible to deploy baits at different spots in the same moment. This gives you more chances to hook up on something and increase your bite per cast ratio. With many snoods popping out, this rig receives more friction from the air during the cast which slows it down and makes it fall sooner in the water. For most of your surf fishing, you'll find that a simple Flapper Rig - either a one, two or three hook version - will best suit your needs.

Longer snoods are usually favoured for some shy-biting species, but if they are used remember to extend the overall length of the rig body. Also, the flapper rig is a great tool to use when you don’t know which bait to use. Throwing different offerings and analyzing your catches may give you a clear idea of which meal is preferred by fish on your fishing day.Tie the hooks to the snoods and then to the swivels; the snood lengths should be around 300 – 500 mm depending upon the length of the trace body. If you need to fish with longer snoods then it will be necessary to either lengthen the trace body, which may restrict casting. or reduce the number of snoods to two. Below the sinker, the main line (usually braid) is tied to a barrel swivel, which in turn connects to a 1 to 3 foot long mono leader ending in a snelled hook. You should also pay attention to the depth of the surf zone before deciding the length of your rig body. Shallow waters will obviously not allow you to use a long one. Since this setup specifically targets large fish, it’s usually a good idea to use it on only one rod, while you use your other rod(s) with more conventional setups to catch smaller fish in the surf. The flapper rig can be fished in the surf with cut bait or natural bait, and works well for medium range casting and a bait and wait strategy. As ’Ology readers may have deduced whilst reading this series of articles, almost all my personal favourite rigs rely on the inherent buoyancy of the hookbait countering the weight of the hook. Therefore, the hookbait and components work together in harmony to control the relative orientation between them as the rig settles on the lakebed, with the hook on the bottom and hookbait coming to rest perfectly just above it. That way, life is all good, and I can descend into a deep slumber at night, content and assured that the rigs are laying out perfectly, primed and ready to react unimpeded when I need the rig to do its job. For this rig, connect your main line to a strong leader line using a barrel swivel. Then connect the other end of the leader line to a weight using a swivel clip. When choosing the type of leader line, look for a strong monofilament or fluorocarbon line that is anywhere from 60-80lbs. This will allow the rig to handle a decent-size fish. When we’re fishing over large beds of bait or spreads of nice big boilies, a match-the-hatch hookbait offers distinct benefits in terms of subtlety, with them blending in visually with all the other free food, and its density. It’s a scenario which fills my big-carp confidence bank to the maximum, far more so than use of a contrasting hookbait—despite me knowing that contrasting hookbaits are also time-proven. I searched the web to see if other fishermen go artificial with this rig, but unfortunately, I didn’t find plenty. Most anglers use natural baits and very few even talk about lures. The flapper rig is best suited for surf fishing which doesn’t require long casting distances over 40 or 50 feet. Anything that is in sea water for a long period of time is going to be damaged, that’s a simple fact. The best readymade sea fishing rigs should have technology to negate this. It’s no secret that knots are a common failure point, so look for rigs that have beads above the knots to cushion the constant wearing of the sea. Fluorocarbon has anti abrasive properties too, so if your rig uses this in its construction, all the better. When it comes to other baits, I like to use squid strips, shrimp or sand fleas when targeting smaller fish from the beach, such as whiting and pompano. How to fish a flapper rig B Trap your snood swivel between a pair of beads, followed by a pair of crimps (or stop knots – these allow you to adjust the distance between snoods).
