About this deal

Inspired though this masterpiece is, it made my job much more difficult. Architecturally, it presented many problems; I won’t explain them all, but first consider this: Where are the courtyards? There are some squares in that drawing, which is helpful, but they’ve got circles (presumably towers) within them. How useful is a courtyard if it’s got a tower within it? Another problem this footprint presented was the locations of windows. With towers in clusters like that, the castle as a whole would be a gloomy place.

Harry meets Dobby again in the kitchens, where he gets bombarded by house elves carrying food and nearly hugged to death. The house elves prepare feasts hours in advance, and levitate the food to the tables above. Hermione tries on more than one occasion to spread the SPEW, but to no avail. Secrets and Spells That flat lawn texture doesn’t look horrible from a distance, but it’s pretty obvious that there’s no actual grass here when you get close like this. So I did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while: I used Blender’s relatively new geometry nodes feature to create actual blades of grass. been working on off and on for about a year, around 100+ hours so far. will upload schematic when completeWith its intricate blueprints, Hogwarts castle has become an iconic symbol of the Harry Potter universe. Each floor holds its own unique secrets, whether it’s the powerful artifacts of the headmaster’s office or the magical creatures of the Room of Hidden Things. No matter what your favorite part of the castle may be, there’s no denying the impact the blueprints have had on the series and its fans. The goal is to depict in 2D and/or 3D what Hogwarts and its surroundings look like in my head, factoring in all the details given in the books. I hadn’t touched this area since late March 2019…crazy to think that it’s now been over 2 years since I started this whole project!

Thanks to wifewantsawizard for this very accurate map! The common rooms are located with their respective colors. For the first film, I’ve got two different scans of a single plan of the miniature. One is a high-res B&W scan; the other has much lower resolution and a tighter crop, but it’s in color. Interestingly, their perspectives don’t match, suggesting that one or both of them may have actually originated as photos, not scans. But regardless, here I’ve tried to align them together, applying the low-res color data to the high-res scan. I’ve also rotated it (to match the plans for the other films) and corrected the perspective. Here in the Atlas of Hogwarts we’ve collected a variety of maps and other artwork which depicts the castle and the area around it. With the exception of Rowling’s own map, none of these maps can be considered canon. Some of them predate the revelation of Rowling’s own sketch map on the DVD of Prisoner of Azkaban, so they represent the best guesses of fan artists who had nothing to go on but Rowling’s amazingly descriptive prose. Others serve to illustrate the films or games. All are fascinating in their own way. No idea why they included this door – nor whether it’s also present on the identical tower on the other side, though the extremely minimal photographic coverage of that area seems to suggest that it’s not. (I also know the door disappeared in the digital DH/FB version of the castle.) In any case, my model omits the door on the other tower and attempts to include as much detail on the neighboring walls as can be divined from the available reference. Those constitute one of the most hidden areas of the castle, so if you miraculously find any overhead shots that peer into it, please comment! Then I finished my notes on Deathly Hallows and compiled them according to different areas of the castle and grounds. I wrote out the following guiding principles for myself: Gathering all of these materials can take some time and effort, but with careful planning and organization it is possible. Once you have gathered all the necessary resources for your project, its time to move onto the next step – planning out the architecture of Hogwarts in Minecraft. Planning The Architecture Of Hogwarts In Minecraft But of course, the point isn’t to have the weight map look pretty. The point is to get the twigs in place:

Where details conflict between books, priority is generally given to descriptions that occur later in the series and/or more often. Otherwise, this book is a must-have for any Potterhead or film junkie looking for deep cut behind-the-scenes knowledge. If that’s you, give it a read — it’s available now. Then came the details, with all their subtly variable spacing. Here’s an orthographic view from the side – a perspective-less elevation view, in other words. All the misalignment is totally intentional, and it should be pretty accurate (although I made further tweaks after this render). The seventh floor of Hogwarts is home to the Room of Hidden Things and the Room of Mirrors. The Room of Hidden Things is a magical room that can only be accessed by those with pure hearts. It’s filled with strange artifacts and enchanted objects. The Room of Mirrors is filled with mirrors that reflect the hopes and dreams of those who enter, allowing them to glimpse their future. Finally, the dungeons of Hogwarts contain the Potions classroom, the detention area, and the Chamber of Secrets. The Potions classroom is the place where students learn to brew potions and concoctions, while the detention area is where students are sent if they break the school rules. The Chamber of Secrets is a secret chamber located beneath the school and is home to an ancient and powerful creature.A few years ago I came across a footprint of Hogwarts, drawn by JK Rowling herself. Unfortunately, it looked like this: Fortunately, I’m not as much of a perfectionist as I used to be, so I pressed onward, accepting the fact that close comparisons with the original Hogwarts miniature would still reveal small discrepancies. The overall dimensions are still very accurate – welllllllll beyond the accuracy needed for a casual viewer to be able to say, “Hey, that’s Hogwarts!” And thanks to the photogrammetry I’ve been able to pull from various videos of the castle, I shouldn’t end up with any errors that snowball into large-scale catastrophes. (Famous last words?) I have no drawings of the miniature from OOTP. Fortunately, not much changed, and the changes that did occur will be easy enough to replicate with help from photogrammetry measurements.

The existence of a bell tower is speculative; it’s never referred to as a tower in the book, but the bell seems to boom from somewhere above, perhaps especially close to the courtyard and classroom eleven. Considering how Hogwarts is a “vast”“towering mass” of “many turrets and towers”, I don’t think I necessarily have to limit myself just to the six towers that are explicitly described. Hiss the word “open” to the sink in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom and a pipe will widen in the wall. It shoots downwards, ending in the Chamber of Secrets. This legendary room is described as being somewhere “below the lake” amidst a pile of rat skeletons and a Basilisk (deceased). Work on my 3D model of the Prisoner of Azkaban castle continues! The area that corresponds to Durham Cathedral’s north transept is now complete:Of course, it’ll look better once the far side is enclosed as well; I’m not working on that courtyard side yet. The fifth floor of Hogwarts is home to the Ravenclaw Common Room, the Hufflepuff Common Room, and Professor Umbridge’s Office. The Ravenclaw Common Room is a cozy room filled with books and comfortable seating, while the Hufflepuff Common Room is decorated with bright colors and plenty of house pride. Professor Umbridge’s Office is her personal workspace and it’s filled with dark decorations and strange artifacts. With the finalization of my interpretation of Rowling’s footprint, I began looking through the books to find the information I would need. I collected information in four main ways.
