However, the greater cask contact in a barrel means the first-fill oak has a bit too much influence here as well, making it more one-dimensionally sweet than I would like. ends up in various blends, as it’s the go-to standard for adding smoke to blended malts these days because of its inherent softness and willingness to play with others.

Islay is no exception, with offerings of this type from Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Laphroaig and – the subject of our interest today – Caol Ila. There are so many elements which have left their traces, but which don’t present themselves fully due to the low strength.But it has thoroughly earned its fame not just for its high-quality Single Malts but for its importance in blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Bottle and our beloved Compass Box.
