About this deal

Standard 1080p doesn’t suffer from oversaturation. My best guess is this is the result of a software bug in 4K video that causes Oppo’s AI Highlight mode to switch on, whether you want it or not. And judging by my results, you don’t. Once this is fixed, the Oppo Find X3 Neo should be a great 4K video shooter. Oppo Find X3 Neo s oftware and performance – Not the latest internals, but still powerful All in all, the Oppo Find X2 Neo is an exemplary performer. Just know that for similar money you can step things up to true flagship level. If you want to spend even less than that, then the OnePlus Nord is the best cheap Android phone at the moment. At 6.44inches, it has a slightly smaller screen than the Oppo Find X3 Neo 5G, and its performance is good rather than great. But take one look at the very reasonable price tag and you’ll see why. It is inevitable – with a smaller body comes a smaller battery, and of course a trade-off in battery life. While there are a couple of key areas in which the Neo really succeeds, a nice display and decent battery life aren’t quite enough to keep Moto’s head above water in this crowded section of the market.

The curves and the lines of the handset are all in the right place, with a slight curve to the sides of the screen. The buttons – power on the right, volume on the left as you look at the Neo – are small but easily accessed, the overall size feels like it hits something of a sweet spot as far as today's smartphone market goes: big enough to hold its own, but not so big that you're going to struggle to hold it one hand. Oppo also makes a smart compromise when it comes to the Find X3 Neo’s processor. It includes the Snapdragon 865 CPU rather than the latest Snapdragon 888. The 6.55in FHD+ AMOLED display has a resolution of 2400 x 1080p, a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz and a peak brightness of 1100 nits. So although you don’t get the top specs possible, they’re definitely up there. Clear and bright with vivid colours, the Oppo Find X3 Neo 5G has a screen that makes everything feel smooth and look lovely, whether that’s streaming video, playing games or browsing the web. There’s also HDR10+ support which means that you’ll get the best experience possible from the likes of Netflix, with tonnes of detail and accurate colours. This is a much better choice than dropping to one of Qualcomm’s 7-series chipsets, which would make the Oppo Find X3 Neo appear a poor deal. We like what Oppo has done with the rear camera on the Find X3 Pro, and the Find X3 Neo holds up well in this department too, even if the specs of the cameras have been dialed down a little. There's a quad-lens 50MP wide, a 13MP telephoto, a 16MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro rear camera here. There'a also a 32MP wide selfie camera on the front. This isn’t surprising stuff given the price point, but Android phoness like the Nothing Phone 1 sit in a similar price band and use much less plastic, much more glass and metal. The difference is night and day... or Very Peri, if you're going by my review handset's finish.

Despite its price, the Find X3 Neo includes a decent dedicated zoom camera and can shoot excellent low-light photos. It features a high refresh rate OLED screen like many of the best phones around. Unlike the OnePlus 9, it sports a glass and metal design rather than the plastic seen in several unnervingly expensive phones. Overall the Neo isn’t necessarily the most interesting phone on the market, or at the price point, from a design perspective, but it is robust and comfortable to use, both of which are significant strong points. That it has wireless charging too is a nice surprise, as it is something that much of the competition at the price point omits entirely. Against this, the Oppo Find X2 Neo is a pleasure to handle and use. To begin with, this is down to the use of an extended aspect ratio for the screen. Instead of the typical 16:9 of the past, or the more common 18:9 in the present, this device has a 20:9 screen. I also found a fair bit of overexposure in images, suggesting the dynamic range enhancement isn’t as smart as it could be. Considering the Snapdragon 695 processor has already been identified as a weak spot of the Motorola Edge 30 Neo, could it be to blame here too? Quite possibly.

Test summary

The Oppo Find X2 Neo is quite possibly the nicest phone to hold in the entire range, which is impressive given that it’s also the second-cheapest of the four. When Night Vision is set to On, the LED infrared lights are turned on and the infrared lens filter is placed in front of the camera lens. The video footage in Night Vision mode is shown in greyscale. This manual setting will not be impacted by the light setting the camera is in.

At night, the positive impressions remain. Though the camera will take another beat or two to capture an image, the results are impressive. There is plenty of detail once again, no saturation is lost in the image, and the brightness isn’t boosted to crazy levels, as with the TCL 10 5G. The Oppo Find X3 Neo is a worthy alternative to the OnePlus 9 if you value camera zoom and high-quality build over hardware upgrades that you’d be hard-pressed to notice in reality. You should buy the Oppo Find X3 Neo if… Having a higher refresh rate means that the experience of using the device feels smoother in a way which can be hard to describe. Especially when reading, playing supported games, or moving through the operating system, it removes a lot of the screen tear, to the benefit of the feel. While a MicroSD card is not required for your Neos SmartCam to function, we do recommend using one.

The Oppo Find X3 Neo’s spangly finish is divisive; ColorOS is few folk’s first choice of interface; and the handset comes with last year’s flagship Snapdragon processor at its heart. The camera app here presents as if it has a periscope zoom. There are 2x and 5x zoom presets, and all of my favourite photos are 5x shots. If you’re photographically ambitious, the Mini 12 doesn’t offer a whole lot of room for creativity, but for those just setting out or those looking for a camera free of complications, it’s a great option and very tough to top for the money. There are two main players in the instant camera market: Polaroid and Fujifilm. Both produce a range of cameras along with a range of corresponding, compatible instant film – you can’t mix and match. Fujifilm’s Instax film comes in three formats: Instax Mini, Instax Square and (the less common) Instax Wide. Polaroid, meanwhile, currently produces i-Type film and the smaller Go format film for its modern crop of instant cameras, along with film compatible with select vintage Polaroid cameras.
