About this deal

Well, you get a mishmash - an intellectual smorgasboard of irrelevant arcane trivia, pop thinking, and new age religion - LIKE THIS BOOK. For me, I am glad I read it to see some more of Huxley’s work, but I don’t come away from it feeling like I read a novel. Once again he was doing what he had written in Island, and I had the feeling that he was interested and relieved and quiet. This book gets at an essential that many of us have not taken the time to absorb - but that is evident in the background should we choose to make the effort to observe it - like the saying the democracy depends on a well informed electorate and Albert Einstein's quote: "peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.

The premise is literally "a guy is stranded on an island and while recoving, he gets a full tour of their lives, economy and, philosophies. Born in Italy, she was a concert violinist who moved to the US as a child, performing at Carnegie Hall in her teens. Maybe it's a pity but on the other hand many people tell me 'I took it (LSD) and it changed my life', so you cannot condemn it completely.

Rather, the general definition of a novel is that of an at least vaguely fictional premise and/or fictional characters.

This is exactly the kind of book the world needs right now, perhaps more relevant today than it was upon its publication in 1962. The Palanese also circumspectly incorporated the use of " moksha medicine", a fictional entheogen taken ceremonially in rites of passage for mystical and cosmological insight. Children are our ultimate investment and also very much the ultimate investment of the tobacco companies, the ultimate investment of the liquor companies and, for sure, of the gun companies.Spend a few nights with your mom down the road, and when everyone has cooled down, come back with a clear head. As an only child, I never wanted a sibling, but always wished that my family was closer to our neighbors. The theme is pure Huxley: intelligent, open-minded man gets shipwrecked on a remote tropical island where the native population has managed to create a utopia. In short, Island by Aldous Huxley is a literary masterpiece that deserves a place on every bookshelf.

The Palanese embrace modern science and technology to improve medicine and nutrition, but have rejected widespread industrialisation.

I am unsure if their classes would actually be feasible but I enjoyed their philosophy on them and their general idea. People are so used to rejecting any imperfect reform that comes around in favor of maintaining the status quo, that nothing ever really happens. In this community economics would be decentralist and Henry-Georgian, politics Kropotkinesque and co-operative. There is really so much wisdom embedded in these pages, that often this novel could be read like any piece of philosophic or religious text.

Except he retained all his traditional intellectual pursuits: modern science, technology and medicine. this isn't your typical story; there is no real complication, it is a series of philosophical ponderings surrounding the main character. What in fact I am, if only the Manichee I think I am would allow me to know it, is the reconciliation of yes and no lived out in total acceptance and the blessed experience of Not-Two. Another sign maybe that we are at the dawn of the 1960s, NLP has just been invented, psychology is mainstream and eastern philosophies on the verge of fashionability, Mahayana Buddhism with a splash of Hinduism provides the cultural bedrock that the creators of the utopia work with.On the other hand if humanity is part of the Divine, then the lion can lay down with the lamb without eating it. Soma, the state-distributed drug used in BNW, creates only positive experiences, which is why the drug is so morally and intellectually deadly. There is a bit of hallucinatory drug taking thrown in as well for good measure as a further way for the characters to seek enlightenment and quite a bit of touring about the island, finding out about what makes it so special and seemingly better than the outside world. Island explores many of the themes and ideas that interested Huxley in the post- World War II decades and were the subject of many of his nonfiction books of essays, including Brave New World Revisited, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, The Doors of Perception, and The Perennial Philosophy.
