This is one of Gerber’s 2 recently released multi-tools – the Truss. It’s marketed as a full-size but compact and lightweight professional-grade multi-tool. Read More >> Gerber clearly wanted to make the MP600 a tool anyone could use, but we feel they made some significant compromises to do so. The tools themselves have well, interesting, designs. There is also no version that comes standard with a removable bit driver. You have to buy aftermarket accessories for that. Don’t get us wrong though, the MP600 is a well made multi tool with a lot to like about it. Note: This is a mostly subjective thread. A lot of people will say that Leatherman pays closer attention to detail, but Gerber still produces excellent tools. Many of their top products are still made right in Oregon by American manufacturing, something a lot of EDC enthusiasts prefer. Truss and Suspension plain-edge blades. The Truss changes the blade shape and adds a bit of length. A much welcomed change! Gerber Truss is made to give you the comfort of use without making it confusing. The tools are inserted in the device in such a way that it is not confusing to figure out how to utilize it. You could think that 3 sizes of flathead screwdriver heads are overkill but as you would know, flathead screw slots are sensitive to being damaged if you put pressure through the wrong sized screwdriver. Phillips head screwdrivers aren’t uncommon in the least but Gerber has done well to include a “3D” head. This means it’s a typical fully contoured head like a dedicated Philips screwdriver rather than a flattened head like you see a lot with multi-tools. A 3D head takes up more space but gives more confidence in use. Leatherman and Gerber are well-known manufacturers of multi-tools. Multi-tools are compact, versatile tools that combine various functions into a single device, making them useful for camping, hiking, and survival activities. Talk about being impressed with something, the Gerber Center-Drive multitool is hands down my favorite multitool on the market.One thing that sets the Crater apart from the Obsidian is the carabiner/bottle opener that folds out from the handle. It can be used to clip the knife to your belt loop but we found it more useful at attaching the Crater to bags. The bottle opener works well enough but can be difficult to get open on the first try. Increasingly, I find that I need hex, Torx or Posi drive bits for the MacGyver jobs I’m doing. But the Truss doesn’t have a hex bit driver. Again, this is personal preference and your needs could be different. Gerber seems to have a thing for bridge terminology for this multi-tool product line. The Truss (a post, rafter or strut that supports a bridge or roof) is an evolution of the Suspension multi-tool (like a suspension bridge, think the Golden Gate Bridge). Apparently, the Truss “bridges the gap between problem and solution”. Clever huh? Well, let’s see how clever it really is! Carry-ability There are standard models with non removable tools, needlenose pliers, bluntnose, straight blade or serrated, the list goes one. Gerber even has versions designed specifically for combat engineers performing demolitions work.
