About this deal

This upgraded version is even lighter than the previous one. Weighing only 6.4 pounds, it’s also one of the lightest on our list today. This bike has easy-grip handles to keep the rider comfortable and provide a secure hold. The 12-inch wheels are puncture-proof and can easily glide over gravel and other uneven surfaces. A correctly sized balance bike can help your child ride without training wheels. They make it fun for small children to learn — it’s easy, and almost every toddler can master it.

MORE THAN JUST A BIKE - Help your kids learn the essential first skills needed to riding a bike. Toddlers love the independence and sense of achievement they get from riding a balance bike. It also build their motor skills, coordination and increase their confidence. GROWS WITH YOUR CHILD - The seat height and handlebar height can be adjusted to ‘evolve’ with your child ensuring a best fit for children from 18 months - 4 years old, or up to 45 lbs. The adjustable seat allows for a ride height 11” – 14.17”. It’s the first bike that grows with kids and their confidence. Similar options: Strider 14x Sport (drivetrain attachment sold separately), SmarTrike Xtend (drivetrain attachment included). Specialized HotwalkThe worst part about being a small biker is that hard metal frames can hurt, especially the handlebar. Balance bikes transcend the bike industry and traditional local bike shops. Walk into any toy, catalogue, or outdoor store, and you’re likely to find some form of balance bike. Likewise, many big brand names in the cycling industry feature at least one balance bike offering in their range. GOODBYE TRAINING WHEELS - Balance bike will prepare your kids for cycling before stepping up to a pedal bike without ever using training wheels. Using our Velo Pro bike is perfect way for your kids to progress to a bicycle cycling in no time. Your child can ride as long as they like with less maintenance required, as puncture-free rubber tires complement the wheels perfectly. Plus, they match the bike’s color, adding to the child-approved appearance.

ICONIC DUAL REAR WHEEL - The Y Velo Junior allows kids to practice with a stable double-width wheel before switching to a single wheel as they build confidence. We’ve completely refreshed our multi-award winning Y Velo Junior balance bikes with new features and vibrant colors, red and blue. Consideration should also be given to the bike’s components and general durability. A good quality and durable balance bike that can stand the test of time, handed down from one child to the next, will minimise the ecological impact. Less durable bikes that need replacing more often tend to find their way into landfill and have an increased environmental impact regardless of the material.

A footrest is an excellent feature. It’s not there so much for resting the feet as to replicate how your child would sit if there were pedals. This can help your child get a feeling for how it will be once they upgrade to a pedal bike. Aluminium is another of the pricier materials but can often make for a lighter bike. Bonus rustproof and durability points for aluminium, making it a more suitable material if the bike is likely to lie outside or you are planning on multiple children. The steel Chillafish Fixie feels very robust mostly thanks to its 4.66 kg weight. The traditional learning-to-ride journey on bikes with training wheels first develops the child’s pedalling skill, before introducing the balance skill later. Balance bikes flip that approach on its head, by first developing balance and later introducing pedalling. In my experience, children find the progression on a balance bike more intuitive than trying to adapt to a regular pedal bike with training wheels. A child’s confidence also grows as they progress on a balance bike, building another key component for when the time comes to pedal off unassisted. GOODBYE TRAINING WHEELS - Balance bikes allow children as young as 18 months to be prepared for cycling before stepping up to a pedal bike by three or four years old - without ever using training wheels.

Balance bike frames are typically manufactured with steel, alloy, wood, plastic, and even carbon fibre. While steel is the most robust of these materials – an important factor in withstanding the rigours of playtime – steel bikes will be amongst the heaviest options and typically sit at the pricier end of the spectrum. Steel bikes are also prone to rust if left outside or uncared for. The bike itself is fairly low-maintenance. The tires are 12-inch EVA polymer foam, so they don’t require air. They’re also rust-resistant and will be able to carry your little one for years. The bike is suited with puncture-proof EVA wheels. These are lightweight and textured to provide superb traction. Your toddler can ride over various surfaces without affecting the steering.Other drop-bar balance bikes are available. There is the Early Rider Road Runner. At 3.6 kg and with pneumatic tyres, the Road Runner seemingly makes for a much better bike. It also looks much better, has a proper headset, classic-looking saddle, wrapped bar tape, and a turning limiter (should you want one). However, it is more than twice the price of the Fixie and discontinued.

The crankset slides into the bottom of the seat post in big balance bike mode. The pedals are also well sized and feature plenty of grip. Some children may feel intimidated if it’s their first-ever introduction to a bicycle. If that’s the case, take them to a place where the ground is even and paved. These bikes can take some time to get used to, but it’s all about patience. Your child will soon gain confidence, and you can encourage them to lift their feet from the ground. A few models come with footrests that assume the position where the pedals would be. Advantages of Balance Bikes The reach on the LittleBig’s brakes is fantastic for a child. My adult hand just about fits behind the brake lever. Balance bikes are gaining popularity among parents because they eliminate the need for training wheels. They speed up the process and teach the rider to focus on balancing as opposed to pedaling (1).

The extra-large wheels are a fantastic feature on this bike. My kiddo is always biking over uneven terrain like grass or gravel. These large wheels help to level out bumps, assisting the rider’s balance. The saddle is also very hard and the footrest with a built-in foot brake seems an odd pairing. It seems unlikely a child will use a foot brake and the integrated brake means it cannot be used as a footrest. Even if older children do have the coordination to use a foot brake, moving the brake away from the hands, where it undoubtedly will be on their next bike, to the feet, will do little more than cause extra confusion when adapting to pedalling on a standard bike. Hopefully, if you have got this far, you will have noticed the importance we put on a bike’s life span. Key to this life span is the bike’s durability and serviceability. While undoubtedly costing more, bikes that resemble adults bikes and manufactured with recognisable bike parts are almost always longer-lasting and more serviceable than bikes treading the line between balance bike and toy.
