The actual Macro mode isn’t easy to find in the Camera app. And when you do try to take some super close-up shots, you’ll be left with largely unusable images. There’s noticeable distortion, noise, and colours don’t look anywhere near as vibrant. It’s a common trend for budget smartphones to include a low-res macro lens as a third camera, but it doesn’t make it any less disappointing. The Magic 5 Lite’s rear camera array is spearheaded by a 64MP (f/1.8) main lens, and the photos it produces are generally pretty good. The colours are nice and bright, with plenty of detail and contrast bringing out the depth. I am happy to report that the Magic5 Lite is a gorgeous handset in both appearance and hand feel. The display and battery life are both fantastic, with the only snag on the latter being that there’s no fast charging plug included in the box. Wi-Fi 5 is supported in the WLAN, and the Magic5 Lite works both stably and with expected speeds within this standard. Powering the Magic 5 Lite is the Snapdragon 695 chipset coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It’s an octa-core CPU, with an onboard Adreno 619 GPU for graphics. As is the norm for budget smartphones these days, it also supports 5G connectivity. The Honor smartphone can accept up to two nano-SIM cards, but it does not support an eSIM. VoLTE and WLAN calls are supported, however. There is no integrated SIP account management. The voice quality is good when held to the ear and minor noises are suppressed. However, the user sounds quite tinny in speaker mode.
At least things feel familiar compared to other Honor smartphones, if you’re coming from a previous device. MagicUI 6.1 is intuitive – easy to get around, features similar navigation, and offers a well-designed UI. Brightness managed to stay pretty consistent with the main lens, although the detail in the trees leaves a lot to be desired. Video recording is capped at 1080p at 30fps, which isn’t the best, but is understandable at this price. The software runs on Android 12, with Honor’s own Magic UI 6.1 pasted over the top. While not as clean an installation as a Google or Motorola phone, this is far from the worst custom Android OS on the market.
