About this deal

September 2016 marked the launch of Scapa Glansa, the latest single malt whisky expression from the Orcadian distillery, Scapa. This is the first peated whisky from the Scapa range and brings a unique flavour that represents the diverse and unexpected contrasts of the island it is distilled upon. A much loved old discontinued expression from the other Orkney distillery, Scapa. Replaced briefly (and unsuccesfully) by a 14 year, an excellent 16 year followed before the distillery moved to NAS expressions. Scapa pride themselves on their dedication to traditional distilling and are one of the few manually run distilleries around today.

The 'radio 2' of whisky, nothing wrong with it and nothing special either. Quite enjoyable in fact. The finish is long and winding, allowing the smoke to move like it is coming straight off a peat fire.Taking their signature smooth fruity single malt, which is aged in American Oak casks, this expression is then rested in peated casks. The smoke is dense but not overwhelming, allowing the other flavours to show themselves fully. It is soft and warm, making this the perfect malt for cold, winter nights.

The caramel has depth and character and as well as interacting with the fruits it also bounces off the whiff of smoke drifting across the taste buds. There’s only a handful of bottlings on the market, unless you believe all these undisclosed Orkney whiskies are from Scapa distillery. It is an interesting distillery though, with the only working Lomond (wash) still left in the Scotch whisky industry (albeit with modifications).

Mouth: a thin delivery on diluted ashes. There’s some vanilla cake and subtle pepper, coated in a round creaminess. Apple and citrus. Then soft hints of roasted coffee beans, which are quite nice. Taste: Medium body with medium sweetness. Vanilla, light touch of coffee, creamy, hints of ashes. Mild ginger and white pepper.
