About this deal

When James Herbert published his first novel, The Rats (1974), at the age of 30, it was an immediate bestseller.

Shrine by James Herbert - Pan Macmillan

The level of gore is, by the author's standard, fairly mild but the lurking malevolence still comes across strongly. In his third horror book, author Herbert made use of supernatural horror instead of the science fiction horror. I considered being pissed about the ending but upon further contemplating on the matter I decided it made sense in context. There are some great scenes regarding the background characters and townsfolk and how the sudden fame of the town and tourism impacts them and how they can benefit from it. In 1845, in Banfield, Massachusetts, Mary Elnor, a woman who has been accused of witchcraft, is hanged from a tree and set on fire.

It wasn't gross or disturbing in a way that's haunting but the imagery of it just sticks in the brain.

Shrine (novel) - Wikipedia

In this sense, we’re ultimately talking about a plot pretty much involving demonic possession and a mass misguided belief and far little else. Author Herbert left that agency after some time and began working for the Charles Barker Advertisers. The Unholy didn't receive great reviews, sadly, despite a cast that included Morgan, William Sadler and Cricket Brown.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 27% of 60 critics gave the film a positive review and an average rating of 4. He seemed to be ruminating over all the injustices that life had inflicted upon him when he gets attacked by a several dog sized rats. In the thriller The Spear (1978), a private eye finds himself involved with a neo-Nazi cult that plans to use the power of the spear that pierced the side of Christ to take over the world. Like the book, The Unholy centers around a deaf-mute girl who is cured of her condition, and claims it was a miracle by the Virgin Mary. These miraculous events quickly snowball and see the location of the visitation, an old, twisted oak tree (uh oh), transform into the eponymous Shrine.
