Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. If you want to reduce the intensity of your light and you’re able to dim the light, you might make dimming the light your first choice of operation. However, dimming an incandescent light source also alters the color temperature. In principle, these setups are actually very simple. After all, we’re only using one light in some cases…. and anybody can place one light right? ;) But whenever we use a VERY hard light source like an optical snoot we need to be extremely careful with where we place it due to those unflattering shadows. Plus, we also need to be mindful of what colours we’re combining too. Always use some basic colour theory, but don’t forget to consider the density of the gels too. So before you pull out the tape and scissors and begin splicing old gels, here’s some points to remember. Points to Remember!

Even today's gels can burn out (to lighten in color starting in the center) easily, rendering them useless. To help combat this, high-temperature materials – polyester having the highest melting point of 480°F (249°C) – can be used to help prolong the life in high-heat output lighting instruments. As instrument design improves, it has become a selling point on many lights to have as little heat radiating from the front of the fixture as possible to help prevent burn-through, and help keep the stage and actors cooler during performances.

What Are Color Gels?

I shot a wedding and the CTO was great at the reception. Whites looked white and skin tones looked natural. However it did not look the the reception I and all the guests witnessed. There was a warmer yellow glow to it. Nothing I could not touch up a bit after. Because gels always show up in the shadow and need very little power to do so, I created a blue room in the studio just by gelling my fill light. As you know, fill lights are designed to lift shadows and be “invisible” themselves. A great way to fill a photograph is to bounce your flash into the ceiling and light up the whole room.

Soft light tends to be more pleasing than undiffused light. Harsh highlights and shadows disappear, and the transition between light and shadow areas becomes more gradual. Probably the main use for soft light is in portrait photography, but it can also be very useful for macro and product photography too.
