About this deal

Whether you’ve been waiting three years (since the most recent book’s publication) or nearly twenty-five for the conclusion to what The Thief started, we’ve come a long way. Outside the temple, Gen temporarily surrenders the Gift to the magus, only to surreptitiously steal it back shortly after. It and four more stand-alone volumes bring to life a world of epics, myths, and legends, and feature one of the most charismatic and incorrigible characters of fiction, Eugenides the thief. There is even a small passage in which Attolis tries to hint about the pockets and Sounis just does not get it, which leads to a classic Gen moment of throwing his wine cup in private frustration.

Conversely, Eugenides must become comfortable with his fears of stealing Attolia’s power from her, trusting that his desire for power can be balanced by her experience, and that they can successfully rule together. Because I’m not a complete cynic, this whole time I’ve been thinking about which classic moments from the series (let’s be optimistic that the whole series gets adapted) that would be amazing on the screen. Ambiades turns out to be a traitor, but is later killed by Pol, who pushes him off a cliff and then jumps after him holding two Attolian soldiers, killing them, but dying himself. Instead of his former travel companion, however, Sounis finds the strangely impersonal Attolis, who talks to him as one king to another, as if they share no history.

He never stopped being the Thief, but he’s also become an epic ruler out of legend without losing any of his cleverness. Turner’s novel provides just enough information about its world for this particular story to operate; even the dangling plot threads regarding Gen crossing Attolia at the end hardly presaged a sequel at the time of the book’s publication.

It would be fun, once Eugenides’ status as the Thief is revealed, to do the flashbacks to how he meticulously planned his subterfuge. The magus says the river overflowed the banks just as Gen had predicted and that they would have drowned had they not moved camp. Neither that movie nor its sequel were well received—by audiences or author—in terms of translating the source material. Megan Whalen Turner’s beloved and award-winning Queen’s Thief series began with the acclaimed novel The Thief. So when the king’s magus invites him on a seemingly impossible quest to steal a legendary object and win back his freedom, Gen in no position to refuse. The elder of the magus’s two apprentices, Ambiades is full of his own self-importance and loathes Gen.
