The happy people that are reintroduced to the readers in the book's epilogue are happy because they are individuals and are in control of their own lives. Michael Mulvaney is the father of the Mulvaney family, their protector and the source of their dissolution, dying estranged from his wife and children, addled by alcohol, and bitter. Not knowing anything about Marilyn Monroe, I chose another oft-mentioned candidate, We Were the Mulvaneys, because this 1996 family saga belongs to a group of summative ’90s novels written by Silent-Generation authors approaching both their own late middle age and the turn of the millennium: Paradise, for example, or Underworld or American Pastoral.

When they are growing up, the Mulvaney children are not so much happy as, like their father in his roofing business, successful.She is a happy, popular teenager, a member of the 4-H club and the cheerleading squad, until Zachary Lundt gets her drunk after the Valentine's dance and rapes her. He is shy but kind and on suspension from college for having loaned his lab notes to another student. Significantly, Marianne's mother knows where to find the dress, and she disposes of it without a word to Marianne, allowing her daughter to fixate in a self-punishing mental state. After traveling several hours, though, Marianne finds that she does not have it in herself to enter the chapel: she watches from outside and sees her mother and Judd, but neither of her other brothers or her father.

In the move beyond the Name of the Father in We Were the Mulvaneys, as well as other narratives, we read social change. Oates’ aggressively leisurely pace can drag at times, but it’s also useful for playing up suspense, mostly in the parts of the novel dealing with Marianne.
