The ever-current Beck has moved on with a new kick-ass femme bassist in Rhonda Smith and the rock-steady rhythm guitarist Carmen Vandenberg. Gibbons, Jan Hammer, Beth Hart, Jimmy Hall and Buddy Guy and concluded with an group encore of “Purple Rain” in honor of Prince.The Blow By Blow-era “Freeway Jam” and the heart-rending instrumental “Because We’ve Ended As Lovers” set us up for Beck’s first special guest, Jan Hammer. As the evening progressed he was joined by many of the great musicians he has collaborated with over the years including Billy F.

Beck set the stage ablaze with incredible live versions of “For Your Love”, “Beck’s Bolero”, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers”, “Big Block”, “Over Under Sideways Down”, “A Day In The Life”, “Blue Wind”, and more. Some of the songs work better than others; the original ‘Heart full of Soul’ and ‘For your Love’ for instance are never going to be bettered while ‘Shapes of Things’ and ‘Morning Dew’ both of which stick to the Rod Stewart versions fare much better, and the Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons tracks are superlative. The setlist reached back to his first recordings with The Yardbirds in 1966 and came right up to date with tracks from his most recent album "Loud Haile. The show climaxed with the guests all joining forces for an exhilarating encore performance of "Purple Rain" in tribute to Prince, who had passed away a couple of months before the concert.And I went to alot of Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, Blues, Rock, Quadrofonic, and Progressive Rock ” Yes”, “Jethro Tull” with his Flute, and Frank Zappa. Beck has surrounded himself with a cast of young players—much like the great bluesmen, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and, yes, Buddy Guy, have done. Beck’s collaboration with the keyboardist was the cornerstone of his most creative period, and with this onstage reunion (“I am so thrilled to have the great Jan Hammer on keyboards,” Beck introduced), the faithful were satiated.
