I was expecting the Vertical Docking Station to be made of the same aluminum as the 13-inch MacBook Air. The elegant and high quality metal construction of the Henge Docks Horizontal Docking Station ensures not only is your laptop secure and protected, but also looks the part - matching the Apple aesthetics and design ethos perfectly. I took the MacBook Pro out, flipped over the docking station and made sure everything was at the proper height and tightened correctly.
My curiosity piqued as I got up to speed on what Henge Docks was all about; not just a glorified vertical stand for Apple notebooks, oh no. The Stone docking station from Henge Docks (I’m guessing the name’s an ironic nod to England’s neolithic monument Stonehenge) is a slim tethered dock that looks as gorgeous as the MacBooks that it is built to extend. Inside the dock are a pair of passthrough connectors that fit securely into the corresponding ports on the MacBook Air. I've never been able to get my head around the two screens of an open laptop and a big monitor; I prefer one large screen. Stay ensures that your windows are always where you want them to be, even as you connect and disconnect displays.
In my case, I was using a passive stand, and it actually gets slightly warmer in the dock – but not notably so, even when video editing or running X-Plane on a 49-inch monitor.
As for those that hate resizing and moving windows that move about as you switch to and from displays of varying resolutions, there's an app for that: Stay. That pricing isn't bad considering vertical stands for MacBooks that don't have any docking magic go for around 50. Once you have all this done you won't ever have to do it again but it would have been better if all this was done to begin with. When you want to take your laptop away from the desk, you simply lift it out – without having to disconnect and then reconnect cables.
