When it comes to moving between and around your rigs, the MX5 has inherited the larger Pedalboard’s single‑press footswitch modes, Stomp, Rig and Hybrid, along with their longer‑press variants, Hands‑Free, Setlist and Touchscreen Lock/Unlock. Lessons from the company’s previous products, and firmware updates in the intervening years, reveal a much-improved UI that’s lightning-fast to learn and quick to make edits.Before powering up this time, I turned down the MX5 volume powered up and, was relieved to find out the right side was working. Featuring a high-resolution 4" touch display, a versatile library or realistic and responsive amp/cab/mic/fx models, gapless preset switching, virtually unlimited custom IR files, and much more, this custom-designed DSP system with powerful multi-core processing capabilities would make a great addition to any players rig.

HeadRush MX5's USB connection opens up a world of feature-rich, intuitive recording and reamping to a computer. I had my stereo system back, "No harm no fowl" so to speak, but, I sure didn't like that first powerup. When you connect the HeadRush MX5 to your computer via USB, you can use the MX5 as a 24-bit 96 kHz audio interface. In addition to this, the radiant high-resolution display offers critical feedback exactly where, and when, you need it, making things simple, fast, and intuitive, especially when you need to adjust or completely recreate your tones post-haste. You could use the MX5 to replace a Whammy, delay, reverb and modulation, with control over all four effects.

There's even an expertly curated selection of premium HeadRush FX that can't be found anywhere else. Effects are excellent, but if pushed we would argue units such as the Boss GT-1000 Core and Line 6’s HX Stomp have the edge on that score. MP3 audio files into the Looper so you can play along with backing tracks, and save your new loops as . Disabling the emulated amps, we ran the pedal into a low-wattage EL84 tube amp, and found that it had no trouble pushing the amp into saturation with its overdrive and boost models.

Curiously, the description of the DSP has changed: the “Powered by Eleven HD Expanded” and “Powered by Multicore System” logos, which adorned its older stablemates, have been replaced by the simple statement that the MX5 features “custom‑designed DSP system and powerful multicore processing”.

If you connect an external expression pedal to this ¼" input, the external expression will control parameters assigned to expression pedal B. This is just one man's opinion, but every time I've ever heard any kind of guitar amp modeling in person it sounds annoying. The latter can be used to navigate around the touchscreen, to select functions and to alter parameters. Loading your own third-party IRs is a snap; simply hook up the MX5 to your Mac or PC via USB and drag-and-drop your choice IRs. Touch screen is very precise and responsive compared to the older headrush models where you tap on things multiple times for it to register.
