About this deal

Depending on the type of cactus you have, it should take about 6 months to 1 year to grow to roughly the size of a large marble. You can usually get away with growing a tropical cactus in a brightly-lit spot that receives no direct sunlight. The RHS Garden Wisley, in particular, has a huge diversity in its glasshouse and rock garden, and succulents often feature in its summer container and bedding displays. However, you won't want to throw a cactus with etiolated growth into intense, direct sunlight immediately.

After the stratification period, prepare a pot with cactus potting mix and plant the seeds as deep as they are wide. Depending on the species of cactus you are growing, germination can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. Quirky and characterful, these popular drought-tolerant plants thrive indoors and sometimes even outdoors. This variety needs to be handled with care because the pads contain yellow glochids (barbed bristles) that look cottony, but contain numerous spines. Most pups grow at the base of the plant, sharing nutrients and water from the mother plant, while others form along the stem or on the pads.Insert the cutting into a mix of 2 parts John Innes No 1 compost and 1 part horticultural grit by volume.

GREEN FINGERS NOT ESSENTIAL: Don't worry if you've never grown unusual house plants before - this kit is designed with beginners in Mind. If planting the more hardy types outdoors, such as sempervivums and stonecrops ( Sedum), this is best done in late spring, once temperatures start warming up. They are drought tolerant, so perfect in dry summers or low-rainfall areas, and are best grown in containers.

Perhaps the most important factor for blooms is to let your cactus experience a period of dormancy, when sunlight and water are reduced. Instead, gradually increase the amount of sun the plant receives each day until you notice that its growth has become normal. They come in a range of shapes and sizes and – if you're lucky – they bear delightful, brightly coloured flowers in summer. Most cacti and succulents don't need pruning, although some of the taller, branching succulents can be trimmed back if they get too leggy.
