After reading this book, I resolved myself to walk more or ride a bike more than riding cars to delay global warming, or save electricity to emit less carbon dioxide. Floodland is an extraordinary novel, set some time in the not too distant future in a land that has been reclaimed by the sea.

She lands on tiny Eels Island, where she must survive in a nightmarish world run by wild children, and stand up to its boy-leader, Dooby. Yes, I always loved myths and legends - I used to read and re-read two books from the library - one a big illustrated edition of Greek Myths and the other Old Peter's Russian Tales. His first book, Floodland, was published by Orion in 2000, and won the Branford-Boase award for best debut children's novel. Norwich is an island and Ely Cathedral, which was originally built on a hill 68 feet above flat fenland, rises now on a tiny island about one mile wide. The language in the book is simple but very descriptive, with interesting discussion points too, making it a good choice of book to read/study as a class. Floodland is a children's fantasy novel by Marcus Sedgwick, published on 2 March 2000 by Orion Children's Books. She leaved all the people that were fighting to get on the boat, and went for an unknown journey with only a compass. Of his story, Sedgwick says, "This was one of those stories that I thought might be a novel originally but actually was much better suited to the tight form of the short story.
