About this deal

As a result, the footprint of the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is roughly A3 in size while standing only 16cm tall, so it’s much easier to accommodate than most A3 printers. Flexible connections, both wired and wireless, mean it's easy for the whole family to print from mobile devices around the home. Overall both printers seem to deliver excellent printing quality while also being more economical than their competitors with the Canon having the edge in print quality by using pigment-based ink and the Epson being cheaper and more convenient to maintain.

Typing in your Wi-Fi password to get the printer online is quite easy whichever you choose and filling the ink reservoirs is easy. Each tray is rather limited in its capacity, however, with the main tray only holding only 80 to 100 sheets of A4. However, there isn't much space from the front and under the scanner, so it may be hard to grab jammed sheets. But, as is the case with the glossy output, unless you’re a fine-art photographer, you’re not going to feel that the ET-8500 is holding you back, at least with respect to the quality of the prints. HEAT-FREE TECHNOLOGY - Engineered with Micro Piezo heat-free technology, you can enjoy consistent high-speed printing, with greatly reduced energy consumption so you can save time and money. For Velvet Fine Art only one setting is available ("Standard") which appears to be the same resolution as "High" for matte or glossy papers but is not bidirectional. Fine details look clear, and the halftones (dots) aren't overly distracting or obscuring smaller elements.

The smaller ET-8500 is delightfully compact and prints anything up to letter size, while the slightly larger ET-8550 can print up to 13″ x 19″, making it perfect for photographers who want to print a bit bigger without breaking the bank. Quoted yields are extrapolated based on the ISO/IEC 29103 pattern with Epson’s methodology printing 10x15cm photos, and NOT based on ISO/IEC 29102. Note: Believe me, I know that showing resized digital photos of real-life prints is not the ideal way to illustrate what a printer is capable of. Professional-grade photo printers, such as Epson’s SureColor P700 (and a few other SureColor models) and Canon’s imagePrograf and Pixma Pro machines, use 10 or more. Regarding the cost per print, the ET-15000 yields more prints, and its replacement ink is cheaper, so it costs less to maintain over time than the ET-8550.If you have a smartphone, Epson recommends you use that, which keeps things relatively straightforward.

There are some vertical lines when printing in the Standard Quality mode, but they aren't present when printing in the Best Quality mode.Regarding black-and-white prints: in the print driver, Epson has a dedicated Black and White photo mode that lets you print with Neutral, Warm, Cool, and Sepia toning.
