The book's blurb described it as about "the rise of the geeky teenage Lib Dem who transformed into the queen of the Brexiteers". I liked how the author created this whole background on them, changed from the way many view mermaids. And I KNOW that because I was 100% the formerly chubby child who swam their ass off and trained at that level. The book is split into two parts, with the first detailing Truss's early life and path to the premiership and the second recounting her seven weeks as prime minister. Maybe if we had broadened out more -- spent more time with Kavya or other characters or one dates where they actually talked about things, the "romance" aspect would have come through stronger.

Out of the Blue reads like a series of lively dreams, by turns magical and stoic and strange, and each sensational.

It's always nice to have books with queer main characters where being queer isn't part of the conflict at all. But, at the end of the day, the message of this story is all about self-love, and about all the different things in your life that can make you happy besides romance.

I also found the merworld the author created very interesting — their culture doesn't have a binary concept of gender, they focus on society instead of individuals, and they worry and take care of nature and marine life. In fact, Stef Murphy’s sweeping landscapes and sympathetic colour use means Out of the Blue a striking reading experience. Aside from a mention of some people glaring at them for their androgynous outfit, all the characters accepted it and at no point was there drama because of it. The Jellyfish brooch—handcrafted over the span of 900 hours—is imbued with a sense of movement, expressing the jellyfish’s unique dance through cutting-edge craftsmanship.Now, I don't mean that I'm finding fault with two hormone-riddled teenagers having sex as part of an overarcing storyline of romance.
