About this deal

With the original illustrations from Jean de Brunhoff's 1931 classic, this first Babar story has enchanted generations. The reward for this serene corporatism is apparent on the next page: after working in the morning, the elephants take the afternoon off. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Facsimile of First Edition; Facsimiles of originalsketches and maquette; Commentary and translation by Christine Nelson and Sophie Lewis.

The fragile archives that trace the fascinating history of the little elephant are too delicate for permanent display but are bursting with colour and characterisation. Jean had produced the very first Babar book at the demand of his wife and two children, who had fallen in love with an elephant-centered bedtime story that she had been telling the children in the summer of 1930. Far more than an allegory of colonialism, the “Babar” books are a fable of the difficulties of a bourgeois life. Babar's mom is killed by hunters, so he goes off to the big city and is taken in by a rich old lady who happens to like elephants and he becomes her boy toy.

Laurent de Brunhoff, who was 12 when his father died, continued the Babar series after his father’s death. The case cannot be dismissed out of hand: it’s easy to see that, say, “Little Black Sambo,” for all his pancake-eating charms, needs to be thought through before being introduced to young readers, while, to take an extreme example, a book from nineteen-thirties Germany about the extermination of long-nosed rats by obviously Aryan cats would go on anyone’s excluded list, however beautifully drawn. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. Finally, presented alongside thumbnail reproductions of each page, the sketch studies and maquette are annotated with references to the published book, and the story is given in both French and English in a new translation exclusive to this edition.

I remember being in love with Babar as a child, but I'm thinking they must have been the updated stories. On his bottom ‘25 x 32’ has been scribbled – thought to be the intended paper size for the finished book. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. To this unique spirit of affirmation and delight there is only one thing left to say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABAR!

The BABAR books set the tempo for all picture books that followed: their "large format, fine litho-printing and hand-written text" fueled the "visual triumph" (Whalley and Chester, 189) of the picture book in the 1930s. A global cultural phenomenon, whose fans span generations, Babar stands along with Disney's Mickey Mouse as one of the most recognized children's characters in the world. Stories are as follows: The Story of Babar; The Travels of Babar; Babarr the King; Babar's Birthday Surprise; Babar's Mystery; and Babar and the Wully-Wully. There's something for all types of children, what's important is that they all show tales beyond the familiar. The attention to stylish clothing perhaps reflects the fact that the original publisher of the books was Editions du Jardin des Modes, owned by Condé-Nast.It appears that the book has been repaired and strengthened with a new spine, but original laid down and retaining original endpapers and covers. Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln.
